It was a safe, cheap, easy way to be "edgy" in the 80s.  It was much worse after the wall came down.  Then people had to get tattoos to be edgy (edgy just like everybody else!), and those aren't safe, cheap or easy.  We had it rough, I tells ya.

It really became inexcusable as soon as Stalin consolidated control over the USSR. Not that I think the pre-Stalin Bolshies were great, mind.

That said, it's easy to straw man legitimate complaints about the Cold War as support of the USSR.

Bernie honeymooned in the Soviet Union.

As part of a sister-city initiative w/ Burlington, a part of detente. All this proves is that he was a diligent mayor.

As for OP -

Wow, you're horrible. I suppose you think Slobodan Milošević, Ante Marković, Petar Stambolić, and Josip Broz Tito were better than Eisenhower, Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon, Ford, Carter, Reagan, and Bush?

Absolute hypocrites. Modern politicos forget way too easily that the Soviet Union was closer to a fascist state than a socialist one.

Explain, please? There were no millionaires in the USSR until the 1980s. There were plenty in the fascist states.

In any case, pro-USSR leftists in the West during the Cold War were HPs, but better than those who took the Maoist side of the Sino-Soviet split.

Back in the 1980's the NDP, which is Canada's left wing socialist/social democrat party proposed that Canada leave NATO and in turn Poland would leave the Warsaw Pact. That was a very naive pie in the sky proposal to say the least. I was too young to remember, but apparently my grandmother took a extreme neutral stance in the Cold War.

She often said that both the Soviets and the US were imperial overlords, with the US maintaining it's sphere of influence via nasty coups and CIA meddling while arming any thug willing to be anti communist. Just as bad to her was the Soviet empire crushing dissent and sending in tanks into the streets in case any of their satellite states got too unruly.

No.

Joseip Broz Tito is better, the rest are on par with the US presidents, and Slobodan Milosevic  is an obviously worse.

US society was better than soviet society, however foreign-policy wise, they were both as awful as each other, with Maoists being unilaterally worse.

Explain, please? There were no millionaires in the USSR until the 1980s. There were plenty in the fascist states.

There's a lot more to socialism than just equality in wealth. Equality in race, religion, ethnicity, and the rest of the works are also key - as is the defense of civil liberties and freedom of speech, which is why Eugene Debs is sympathetically-regarded by many self-proclaimed libertarians, and why Bernie Sanders has been such an ardent opponent of things like the PATRIOT Act. Even beyond that, the USSR really wasn't equal in wealth or power, either - the very crux of socialist thought. There were no millionaires, sure, but Soviet money was not in any way distributed equally among Soviet citizens; it was all in the hands of the government. I find that socialists also tend toward noninterventionism, at least in my experience with them, and the Soviet Union was the absolute furthest thing from noninterventionist.

So, that's my argument. When you get down to it, the Soviet Union was barely any different from Nazi Germany - just poorer.

Tito crushed opposition, which at first was Stalinists. Afterwards, he crushed small-d democrats, reformists, and liberals.

The Government controlled everything in the soviet era which is literally the definition of Communism .
