I saw on Wikipedia that Condoleezza Rice is among the potential Republican candidates for Governor of California.

Could Condoleezza Rice win the gubernatorial election in a liberal state like California in 2018 due to her name recognition, to her moderate faith, to her pro-choice stance, to her criticism of Donald Trump in addition of not supporting him, to her potential appeal among her fellow African Americans and to the fact that more people approve her job performance as Secretary of State (43 %) than Hillary Clinton (32 %) and John Kerry (14 %) despite her ties with the Bush administration?

No, but only because she won't run. (Though believe me, I wish she would.)

If she ran she'd make CA Gov. lean D, that's as far as a Republican can get it atm.

No she wouldn't, she'd do even worse than generic CA Republican.

I think she'd have a chance against a non-Newsom candidate.

The Republicans' main problem right now is Brown and Newsom are such strong candidates. Once they're out of the picture, the Republicans won't have held a statewide office for sixteen years.

No, I don't think so. She may do better than most GOPers (except Faulconer), but would lose to either Gavin Newsom or Antonio Villaraigosa. I'm pretty sure the CA Gov election will be between these two Dems, because we have this horrible primary system in place. As things now stand, I believe Newsom will then go on to win by high single-digits.

I'm sure California would love her support of "enhanced interrogation techniques".

She's a relic of a bygone era. Democrats won't support her over someone like Newsom, or Chiang even, for her involvement with Iraq and the Bush administration. Republicans won't like her either, as the party has moved away from her positions. They'd more likely tactically vote for a moderate Dem in the jungle to get them to the runoff.

The Republican's problem in California isn't that Brown and Newsom are strong candidates. I hate to give really simple reasoning, but it's literally because California is so Democratic and the Republican brand here is dead. Simply, there is no coalition that Republicans can put together to win statewide. The 2016 results show that the only places that vote Republican reliably anymore are places where no one lives. With a great economy, rapidly growing minority population (not that whites in California don't vote Democratic), a deep Democratic bench, a potential DvD race, and in a Trump midterm, Republicans will get wiped out in California in 2018.

She doesn't want to run. Rice is having a good time working for Stanford and the NCAA.

She will never run, so no. (I have some friends who are close personal friends with her. She never plans to run for office, ever.) I

That said, she would win if she ran.

Jesus Christ. People have been talking about her running for higher office since literally 2002. It's been 15 years folks and she's not interested in running. Even if she would, she's a has-been and not exactly at home in today's Trump party. Give it a rest

But...but...but...Dick Morris told me Democrats would vote for her because she's a black woman.

She didn't run for anything in 2008, 2010, 2012, 2014 or 2016. Why would she run for anything in 2018 or 2020? just STAHP.

Can't win if you don't run. I don't think Rice wants to touch Trump-era government with a ten foot pole, especially not after she sat out the Obama years. Moreover, she has never been elected to (or run for election for) any office, so it seems she is uninterested in electoral politics generally.
