Gore talked about "cultural pollution", had a running mate who was trying to censor video games, was the husband of someone famous for trying to censor music, talked about continuing welfare reform and laws against gang clothing while Dubya supported expanding Medicare and didn't talk about the things that I listed Gore talking about.

He was also more hawkish than Bush on foreign policy that year, which lead Bush to win the Muslim vote that year.

I recall most people thinking that in 2000, it didn't matter who won because both Gore and W. were centrist, generic candidates.

I find it funny that in every election, the media hypes the election up to be one of the most important election in history, yet the one election they didnt turn up to be important turned to be the most important election in recent history.

It really is a shame how much people fell for the "Moderate, Anti-War Bush" attitude during the 2000 election. If only they knew.

Just goes to show that candidates say whatever they think will fill the vacant niche that gets them to 270 somehow.  The years following showed that, no, Gore wasn't "more conservative" than Bush in any significant way.  Another thing to consider is that it might not really have been strictly "conservative" to voice those opinions in 2000.

Bush blew the deficit to kingdom-come, Gore would've continued the tradition of 90s clintonism of making cuts to balance the budget. No Iraq War for starters, and if he also won a second term, he would not have let Lehman Brothers collapse (Bush only did that due to GOP pressure).

Compare Clinton/Gore rhetoric to Bush/Cheney 'deficits don't matter'.

Bush and Gore spoke about the issues in a similar enough way that it was part of the joke in this Onion story from that year:
