With rumors about legendary Arizona Sen. John McCain's health after his surgery on July 14, 2017, does the six-term senator run for reelection in 2022, or does he retire?

They're gonna take his head and put it in a glass case and have it run for a seventh term.

Considering he's just been diagnosed with a brain tumor, I'm going to go ahead and say no.

Depends if he survives. But his chances of surviving a Brain cancer are slim (around 25%)

Sad. I don't always agree with his views. He would have probably won the 2000 presidency instead of 2008. The only way he would have won in 2008 is if John Edwards, a cheater won the 2008 Democratic nomination.

From what I understand, its the same variety of brain cancer that took Ted Kennedy and Beau Biden, and at McCain's age, its a lot harder to recover from.

Obviously not. I doubt that he'll make it to the end of this year, let alone the end of his term.

(Originally posted this paragraph in USGD, but figured that it would be better suited in this thread.)

If McCain dies or retires, particularly before 2018, how would he be succeeded in the Senate? Would there be a special election or would the governor appoint someone to take his place before the next regular elections?

Governor Ducey appoints a replacement. The special primary will be held at the same time as Flake's primary. The special general election will be held in November of 2018.

If McCain does indeed retire, Arizona will probably become one of, if not thee most active state of 2018. A whole slate of state offices and 2 Senate seats at the same time makes for massive investments.

Anyway, hopefully McCain can beat this. Brain cancer - or any cancer at all, is no way to go Sad

Agreed but with the type he has his 5 year survival rate is less than 5% and from what i read with his age he probably has a year at most left.

So I hope he is in the least pain possible may not agree with his politics but he served his country honorably

Most likely replacement would be Martha McSally if then Ruben Gallego should run.

Haven't been following the news today?

He has the same cancer as Ted Kennedy. He's not gonna make it till 2018.

Even if McCain hadn't been diagnosed with brain cancer today, I would've guessed he would not run in 2022.

The governor nominates a candidate to serve the remainder of the term. If/when Ducey nominates someone, there won't be a special election in 2018.

Well, he probably won't even be Senator by 2022, sadly.

I think he would have retired regardless, but unfortunately I am not sure if he will be Senator in 2022.

Why not? Is Arizona law significantly different than most other states? There has not been a U.S. Senator from Arizona who vacated their seat in mid-term in all of the state's history so far, but I would think that if a vacancy occurred with two and a half or more years left to go before the six-year term is completed, that there would be a special election. Sometimes states have a special election at an odd time, not in November of an even-numbered year (Alabama this year; Massachusetts in early 2010; Texas in 1993; Pennsylvania in 1991). Is that what would happen in Arizona?

Arizona Republicans:

Martha McSally
Meghan McCain (Yes, I can see Meghan McCain running to replace her father, political nepotism is alive)
Robert Graham

Arizona Democrats:
Terry Goddard
Mark Kelly
Ruben Gallego
Richard Carmona
Ann Kirkpatrick

I think Carmona would be a good moderate Western Democrat to take this seat in a Trump midterm in Arizona.

That's not what this says:

http://www.ncsl.org/research/elections-and-campaigns/vacancies-in-the-united-states-senate.aspx

Arizona is in the list of states where the appointee only serves until the next regularly scheduled statewide election. That would be the 2018 midterms.

I don't think most Arizona Republicans like McSally, they think that she is a RINO.

Irrespective of a possible special election, I think by 2022, Paul Penzone could be a good candidate for either Senate or Governor.
