Extraterrestrial life
«
on:
August 15, 2005, 10:51:51 am »
Alright so, I have talked to many people, and read astronomy books. It seems to me that all i have read, and heard so far lean to the fact that there IS life out there in the universe besides earth.
For example, a few years back, they released a picture that the Hubble space telescope took. It had the view range of a straw. And what they saw there were hundreds, even thousands of small white specs that were confirmed to be galaxies, not stars.
It must be obvious that there MUST be life, even as intelligent as ours, or at least as complex as plants and animals somewhere in another planet that provides approximately the same living qualities that the Earth does.
Just think about it. A universe of an incredible magnitude. How can we be alone?

Unsure(agnostic, lol) but leaning yes. I'd say that if life can occur on one world, it is probable that in the vastness of space there is life elsewhere.

From all we know about the magnitude of the universe, it's extremely likely in a purely statistical sense that there is other life in the universe. I would argue, however, that there's no reason to believe that this form of life is any more complicated or on any form of higher level than what is found on Earth, and therefore, that there's no reason to believe that aliens in flying saucers have been to Earth.

not in this galaxy.
Scientists estimate that it would take between 5 and 50 million years for a race to colonize the entire galaxy. And we've yet to be colonized, and our sun is a relatively new star. Therefore it's highly improbable that a very advanced civilization has arisen in our galaxy, unless they're long gone.

I'm a skeptic, personally, on this. There is a very good chance that intelligent life exists somewhere. There's every chance, but that's all we can say really.
I think about 95% of the sightings people have are very easily identifiable or explainable. However, what perpetuates the UFO and extraterrestrial stuff here on Earth, among several things, in my experience, are the quick routinely dismissive explanations. Ex., someone comes out and says, I saw a weird metallic object glowing orange fly in just above that mountain range, stop, pulsate, and then ascend upward until it was out of sight. And in response, someone says, oh it was Venus. Well, no it wasn't Venus because Venus doesn't do that. That kind of thing eggs on the myths and the 'UFOlogists'.

fun with the Drake equation
A tad simplified, but it generally gets the point across. It boils down to the question of why you think there is life on earth.
If you believe life developed through scientific processes, the question of life existing elsewhere is more a matter of how common it is rather than if.
If you take a religious view of creation, it depends on whether or not you think God created life in more than one place.
Whether or not life from elsewhere has stopped by to visit is a totally different question. Therin lies the
Fermi paradox

Yes, I am one, but I’m certainly not intelligent, and neither are any of my alien brothers.
I believe that God created us, but I have no idea why he would create an entire universe and only one planet with life. So, yes, I believe life exists on other places, but I’m not sure if they would look like us or not.
