If ranked choice voting is repealed or determined to be unenforceable, LePage might have a chance to defeat King. Might this be one reason LePage is considering running?

Would this really make a difference? Democrats don't intend to throw King under the bus, and I don't think there's a serious third party challenger that could split the anti-LePage vote.

Democrats will support King. What would it take for a third party challenger to split the vote enough for LePage to win?
