I have a question... If you don't have a draft.. what happens if all the people die and there is no one left to fight, do we give  up or what?
Obviously, if every civilian is unwilling to enlist in the army, then the collective wish of the civilians will (in effect) be to surrender.

Er, if all the people die who can be drafted?

If you mean all the soldiers, I can't see a scenario in which the entire American army is killed, but in that case it means we ever get the hell out of where they are, or if the war is actually on American territory it doesn't matter because there would be guerilla resistance to whoever was invading anyway. But if some invading power was able to kill the entire American army it would definately be a lost war anyway.

Why do you support gun control? You support freedom in so many other areas...

Because guns are a direct source of violence. Moreover, there is no reason to own a gun except to commit an act of violence (or else to strut, which doesn't count as a reason in my opinion). The self-defense argument falls apart in the face of strong evidence that, for example, home break-ins result in injury or death for the homeowner far more often if the homeowner wields a gun than if not.

Yes, many who have guns are involved in criminal activity anyway. Much of this criminal activity is drug-related, and I think that legalizing recreational drugs would reduce such criminality. Of the rest, at least making guns illegal makes them much more expensive on the black market and thus much more difficult for either criminal individuals or gangs to acquire.

As a general rule, I am in favor of freedoms that benefit society as a whole. Most freedoms do benefit society as a whole. Guns do not.

The fact that Hitler supported one position or another is irrelevant. If gun control is a step towards despotism, I wonder where the fascist regimes of Canada and Britain have gone off to and left their countries to the unruly masses.

In any case, Hitler favored the state distribution and control of gun sales while bestowing guns to his own most ardent supporters. He did not favor the banning of guns.

Given the current US government I don't trust the state. In a country that elections the like of the bushes, Reagan and next year HRC I don't feel safe with any gun control.

I'm pretty sure its a rule of the internet that if you mention Hitler in an unrelated political debate, you automatically lose.

Except you can buy just about any gun in Canada that you can in the US. Haven't you seen Bowling for Columbine?

That only applies to USENET debates and thus doesn't count.
