No man is an island entire of itself; every man
is a piece of the continent, a part of the main;
if a clod be washed away by the sea, Europe
is the less, as well as if a promontory were, as
well as any manner of thy friends or of thine
own were; any man's death diminishes me,
because I am involved in mankind.

I think a balance of both is best and most reasonable.

Who are you? Who am I? I am not you. You are not me. I believe in freedom and liberty, for community is the tyranny of the masses. Furthermore, the community is made up of individuals. He who proposes communitarianism supports not one minority: for the smallest minority is the individual. Let he who claims to have empathy therefore put one man's liberty ahead of his own security, and his own liberty ahead of another man's safety. For if not, he has proven himself a hypocrite in what his ideology pretends to offer: empathy.

I don't consider them opposites.  Which I identify with more depends on the definition.

I agree a mix of the two is best, but if forced to choose between the two...

Given the choice of course libertarianism.

It is preferable to participate in the community - that way you can voluntarily exchange your ideas, talents, and services with a wider range of people. It does not violate ANY principle of individual liberty.  Voluntary & free association is a key aspect of all aspects of a libertarian society including forming groups and associations that maybe are limited in interest and scope and who they serve. It goes along with the key concepts of private property.

However when the ill-defined 'common good' or 'society' in aggregate trumps the rights of individuals and association and provision of services is under compulsion of the state that is when I will side with the individual.

Western libertarian society is genuinely sociopathic.
This, absolutely this. The way we behave actually does affect other people, and this will always be the case no matter how much the cult of individualism tries to wish it away.

We can never escape the impact others have on us, nor our impact on others. If it was not for socialization, humans could not even speak (consider the cases where a child was raised in the wilderness or in isolation). We're inescapably social animals. As persons, we should have our respected rights to self-expression, freedom of thought, and so on, just as we should have rights to material and cultural resources to empower us to live fulfilling lives. At the same time, we cannot use those rights at the expense of others. So, a balance must be struck with the goal of achieving a harmonious community.

Anyone who thinks rabid individualism leads to anything but despair shows they don't understand the foundational qualities of what makes us human.

While in theory, my views are closer to libertarianism, I'd going to say Communitarianism because of these gripes against libertarianism:

- focus almost exclusively on economics and guns rather than the issues where libertarians ally with liberals.

- focus on the government being the far biggest threat to individual liberty, while in practice, other entities (corporations, etc.) can be very restricting.

- it is totally amazing what economic right-wingers and corporations will do just for profit, and it is necessary for the government (or other entity if possible but it doesn't seem like the private sector or free market can/will do this) needs to be a check in order to protect human rights, public health, etc.
