No man is an island entire of itself; every man
is a piece of the continent, a part of the main;
if a clod be washed away by the sea, Europe
is the less, as well as if a promontory were, as
well as any manner of thy friends or of thine
own were; any man's death diminishes me,
because I am involved in mankind.
Who are you? Who am I? I am not you. You are not me. I believe in freedom and liberty, for community is the tyranny of the masses. Furthermore, the community is made up of individuals. He who proposes communitarianism supports not one minority: for the smallest minority is the individual. Let he who claims to have empathy therefore put one man's liberty ahead of his own security, and his own liberty ahead of another man's safety. For if not, he has proven himself a hypocrite in what his ideology pretends to offer: empathy.
