In the 2016 election, both major candidates' home states were New York, thus giving them both the home-state benefit (Trump in upstate and LI, Clinton in downstate). If either Trump or Clinton weren't from New York (yes, I know Clinton is originally from IL) and have it as their home state, what would the results have looked like?

IF:
Trump wasnt New York then it could go either way. A Kasich like Republican could do better then Trump in New York due to the Suburbs in the Downstate though probably doing worse in the Upstate. A cruz like figure would repeat a 2012 Romney in New York

Clinton wasnt from New York then again it could go either ways. A Bernie Sanders could do better due to the fact that he would do better in the Upstate and so win New York upwards of 60% A more Moderate Democrat or a Democrat faced against a Moderate Republican could possibly due worse.

I think Kasich would win the primary.
