To take a job in the State Department, lol.

So how does this affect next year's race? Discuss.

Intuitively, one would think that being an incumbent would help Coyle, but Brownback's mess becomes his and he'll probably be stained by it for good. The Republican primary just got a lot more interesting!

Colyer is a birther who tried to get Obama off the ballot in 2012, so perhaps he'll be splitting the nutjob vote with Kobach. I wonder how much power the newly found moderate faction of the KS GOP will have in the primary.

He is not resigning right away but will wait for the Senate to confirm him.

His Lt. Gov, who is also part of the "far-right" wing of the Kansas GOP. It'll be interesting how he governs, ad how he may affect Kobach/others in next year's race.

A Colyer vs. Kobach vs. Schmidt/O'Malley/some other non-Brownbacker race would be absolutely brutal.

Kobach technically has more "name ID", so he'd probably win a primary, unless Colyer does something impressive as Governor.

With Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback's resignation as Kansas Governor, Lt. Gov. Jeff Colyer will be the next Kansas Governor.

Coyler could run for a full term in 2018, but in the KS GOP primary, it could be a bitter GOP primary.

Coyler wins if Kansas Secretary of State Kobach steps aside to be Trump's A.G. if Trump fires Sessions.

Kansas Secretary of State Derek Schmidt could be a formidable conservative challenger.

KS-GOV 2018 is Tossup, despite Brownback and the KS GOP's problems.

From what I know, this seems like a Brownback 2.0, except able to run for "re"election. So, not really good news for Kansas

My bold prediction: Since this elevates Colyer to the governorship and he probably would like to run for reelection next year, Kris Kobach will drop out and get appointed Attorney General in return by Trump after Sessions is fired.

I hope we get some more people into the race. Yoder has sent signs he may want to run but I like him as Rep. I just hope I don't have to end up voting for Coyler or Kobach.

Colyer is definitely on the right wing of the great GOP divide and will struggle to disassociate himself from the Brownback agenda. He made a $500,000 loan to the Brownback campaign when Paul Davis had momentum and was put under federal investigation for a while because of it.

I think it will be tough for Colyer to find a spot in the gubernatorial race, considering that Kobach, while more polarizing, is far better known. Only 32% of Kansans know who Colyer is compared to 77% with Kobach.
[page 23], but out of 10 his rating from the public is 4.37 compared to Kobach's 4.03. Out of all potential 2018 contenders polled these two registered the lowest favorability.

"Ambassador-at-Large of the United States for International Religious Freedom" sounds like one of the most ineffective and useless posts at the State Department.  Brownback clearly wanted out.

If Trump fires Sessions, I could see him choosing Kobach.

In which case, Coyle, while tainted by Brownback's toxicity, can continue on to face down Svaty.

At this point, I'm honestly starting to consider Svaty the favorite going into the general election, and I might even give Brewer the edge. The KS-GOP is in a full-in apocalypse.

I'd love to see Kansas vote for another Democrat Governor to show republicans that even your base wont back you if you destroy there state with extremist policies.

I don't think Svaty has enough name recognition to win. Everyone knows Coyler and Kobach but nobody has heard of Svaty and I live in one of the most Democratic counties in Kansas (which is a swing county at best).

I think this may be one race where immediate name recognition will end up being a detriment. The fact that the entire state already knows who they are is going to do absolutely no favors for Colyer, Kobach, and Brewer.

There's a lot of time to go until the election. Svaty is trying to tour every county and his campaign is gaining traction relatively quickly. He recently held an event in Wallace County, where Hillary Clinton got less than 6% of the vote. Dude is serious about spreading the Democratic message in all corners of the state.

Ironically, Brownback created the "Ambassador-at-Large of the United States for International Religious Freedom"  position back in 1998
This is my new favorite trivia fact.
