This.  I have issues with all of them, but it's the best region of the country with the kindest, most polite and hardest working people in the country, a great variety of economic, geographic and cultural subtypes and, of course, the great Big Ten Conference. Smiley

It would be sad if Indiana is 1 way from being a FS. Truly great state with great people.

Illinois: I have family ties to the state, and Chicago is an amazing city. Massive, humongous Freedom State
Indiana: Cool industrial heritage and history on the border between North and South. Home of President Benjamin Harrison. Freedom State.
Michigan: Birthplace of Butch Hartman (born in Highland Park and went to school in New Baltimore,
made some of my most favorite shows including the one that gave me my username), natural beauty in UP, and auto manufacturing contributing to a rich history. Also all those Arabs in Dearborn. Freedom State.
Minnesota: What can say? It's got a unique history of rural agrarianism and some Scandanavian thrown in. And hard working class people in the Iron Range. Freedom State, easily, and one of my most favorite in the region after Illinois.
Ohio: Rather fascinating state historically and culturally. Small-town Ohio would be interesting to visit, and the big cities' history of immigrants and industry adds a good flavor. Freedom State.
Wisconsin: Lumber mills in the Northwoods region, cheese, Packers, and the home of Vlad Masters, a show I like. Freedom State.

Illinois: FF. "Home" of Obama (as a Sen), Lincoln (as a Rep, ran for Sen) & Stephen A. Douglas. Being solid Dem doesn't hurt it Smiley
Indiana: Has Pence (ugh). But Peter Buttigieg & having a Dem Sen make up for it. Great respect for industrial workers/blue collar white working class, in general, esp. those who went blue for Change in '08. Bernie state!
Michigan: Bernie state! State of hard workers that needs economic recovery. Cities are in a sad state as are across the Rust Belt, Flint is a shame & Gov. Snyder is a disgrace.
Minnesota: FF. Bernie state, blue state. Home of Mondale. Cold temp Purple heart. Home of Ellison, too!
Ohio: Props for Kasich, Sherrod Brown, Nina Turner. Home of hard workers who've been downtrodden by unrestricted free trade.
Wisconsin: Tammy Baldwin. Bernie state. FF.

EDIT: Didn't see the poll, but all FS, I suppose. Smiley

FS for 5 of 6

Illinois no choice - Chicago's people, food, and music (house and soul) cancel out the bad politics and my dislike of the Blackhawks. Downstate seems really isolated from what we are about - and seems more plains states. There are some pockets of similarities but I do wish they would do something about those tolls & highways.

I like my customer, Honda - so Indiana and Ohio are totally fine for me even though I am not a big fan of Pence's politics or how the Buckeyes run their football team. Plenty of good people to work with and there's a lot of back and forth especially with places like Fort Wayne and Toledo with Detroit - so they are of a kindred spirit.

As for MN - I love Prince - enough said

On Wisconsin - Badgers, Brewers, Bucks and some good memories in Milwaukee - that's good enough for me

Of course Michigan - I doubt I would stay here for more than 10 years if I didn't really like it.

Other than by Rockford, there are no tolls in Downstate.

It's really sad that Indiana got FS status. It's really a miserable place all around.

Illinois - HS; without Chicagoland, I would have voted FS

Indiana - mostly small towns and farms, FS for that alone

Michigan - FS; land of John Dingell (would like to praise Conyers too, but you can't do that now), lovely small towns, lakes, ideal places for outdoorsmen, and although I hate cities I have a soft spot for Detroit as the "underdog city."  Also that Bernie upset was perhaps the greatest night of 2016 for me

Minnesota - FS; nice people all around, even the cities there look pleasant, and rural folks vote more Democratic compared to most other rural parts of the US

Ohio - FS; I would never live here, but almost every person I've known from Ohio is super friendly

FS for all states except Illinois.
