That is kind of the job of a member of the NAACP to advocate for, nothing really surprising here.

Race shouldn't matter at all in picking running mates. It should be decided on Policy, Merit, and Political intention.

It'd go great with Merkel's coalition with the Greens!

Honestly I think having a black person on the ticket would be a good idea.

It's not stupid, it's something that could help turnout. As we saw in 2016, black turnout dropped with Obama on the ballot and in critical states. It's no different than picking a running mate based on regional appeal. Democrats are not going to lose just because a non-white person is on the ballot.

The problem is, aside from Booker (who is probably too right-wing for the national ticket), there just aren't that many Black politicians in America who even know how to appeal to White voters.

Most Black politicians come from minority majority districts where they don't ever have to speak to non-Black voters or talk about issues that aren't specifically Black.

Having a candidate who is only appealing to 10% of the population just doesn't make sense in a national race.

The last thing White Americans, most of whom are struggling economically, want to hear is a Black politician talking about how bad Blacks have it and how they need more tax dollars for Black targeted programs.

That doesn't mean they don't want to hear any Black politician at all though. Obviously people liked Obama. But Obama couched his appeals in universalist terms. Most other Black politicians in America simply aren't used to doing that.

If Nina Turner was more experienced, she'd be great. But some sh**tty candidate just because they're black? Hell no!

Perfectly fine, black voters are very loyal to the democrats so of course they want to a seat at the table

The blacks have had their turn. One major party nominee in the entire history of the United States is enough, we have to go back to nominating bland middle aged white guys every time

I wouldn't say no, but as I've said many times, ethnic polarization along partisan lines is bad for minorities. It would be better to have a seat at the table no matter which party won-- which means black representation in the GOP is a bigger deal.

Blacks aren't having a seat at the GOP table in considerable numbers until two things happen:

1. The GOP ditches the southern strategy
2. Blacks reach economic parity (or close to it) with whites.

Never say never. I don't think all Republicans are as racist as they seem. They hate Hispanics and other immigrants more than blacks at this point. The anti-blackness is a lot lower now than it was 20 or 30 years ago.

It's not like black turnout was particularly low in 2016, it was about the same as it was in the last non-Obama election, which at the time was a record high. If we accept that Obama was a once-in-a-lifetime candidate for black voters then the Democratic party has probably more room to grow with other ethnic groups.

Until black voters can maintain a consistent level of turnout that doesn't wildly fluctuate based on whether a black mega-star candidate like President Obama is on the ballot (who 99% of black candidates can't aspire to be) - ultimately pushing the party to focus more on black issues when present and then leaving the Democratic Party incapable of winning due to the backlash when not - I don't think the electoral/political positives of running a black candidate for President necessarily outweigh the electoral/political negatives of what happens whenever we inevitably don't.

Both black and white voters are becoming a smaller share of the party with each passing year, so if we're going to pander along racial and/or ethnic lines, at least pander to the ascendancy.

Too early for it to happened again. The white-lash may not have been the sole cause, but it was real in 2016.

Then Trump will win 2/3 of the white vote, since race relations have hit rock bottom under Obama and the top black candidates are corporate democrats like Booker and Harris.
