North Carolina is a beautiful state. It has mountains, beaches, cities, farms, and everything in between. What's not to love about it?

Exceedingly low, but I've been told that Tulsa is a really great 'art city.'

CT is OK, and when Oklahoma sends its people, they're not sending their best, although the Oklahoman I'm getting this from is a counter-example. Wink

Awesome----

Charlotte areas especially rocks....

Never spent time in NC other than around there, but yeah this is not your Dad's or Grandpa's NC of Jesse Helms and all that hate crap, with Republican Politicians wearing ties by day and White Hoods by Night....

Still, a few too many fundies out there for my taste, but since this phenomenon appears to be most concentrated among the older generation, I give the Modern New South state of North Carolina a FS category, since here demographics are on the Left side of History..... Smiley

Downtown Portland can be a bit sketchy, but Salem/Scio are really nice. FS

Downtown Portland is so much less sketchy than when I was a Teenager in the late '80s when open air crack and heroin dealing was going on left, right, and center in Old Town, with the area around the Amtrack and Greyhound station especially sketch....

There are actually much sketchier places these days out by certain cross-streets along 82nd and 102nd Street than in downtown Portland. Hell, even parts of Barbour Blvd and Sandy Blvd have certain places that are sketchier than downtown.

Salem actually has one of the highest % of identified street gang members, according to Oregon Law Enforcement agencies, although I got no beef with Salem.

Scio... well not too many people out there, and generally people keep pretty tight, but there is a bit more Crystal Meth going on in those parts to keep people rolling on 3rd shift work in the 24 hour plants and related transportation (trucking) industries that isn't evident to an outside observer....

I currently live right down the road from Scio, and definitely don't have any issues with my friends and neighbors out in those parts, just curious why you chose to "pick" on downtown Portland, where many of us miss the gritty "Old Town" Portland, before it got completely gentrified over the past few decades....

Anyways--- rant aside--- Glad you love Downstate Oregon, which is actually my part of the State, as opposed to the 50% of the Population that lives in Metro-Pdx (Although I've spent a ton of time out there as well over the decades)....

Come out here, and I'll show you around downstate from the lovely Coastal Communities, to the Mill and University towns around the Willamette Valley....

Much of my heart is in Southern Oregon, but that's probably too much of a Road Trip for someone flying into Portland..... Smiley

Off topic.... my Dad grew up in his Teenage years in Connecticut so I hope you will provide the same offer should I head out that way sometime in the future.... Wink
