Iowa: Birthplace of Captain Kirk. One of the the more boring states in the Union but still has enough interesting things in it for me to vote Freedom State.
Kansas: I have been to Kansas. It's nice, the people are friendly, Civil War stuff is fascinating. Freedom State.
Missouri: see Kansas (sans the I've been there part). Also a storied history of figures from the state including Mark Twain and Harry Truman. Freedom State.
Nebraska: the birthplace of Malcolm X, and an interesting agrarian tradition. Freedom State I guess.
North Dakota: Not a lot to do here admittedly. But the people are wonderful and friendly. Freedom State.
South Dakota: Mt. Rushmore, and Sioux come to mind. Freedom State.

Iowa is the best of this list but none is worse than Misery.  All are basically horrible.

I wouldn't say they are, really.  In fact, both voting overwhelmingly for Trump has brought on a lot of hate.  However, both are pretty well-run states without a lot of socioeconomic problems, nice people, good standard of living statistics, etc.  They're just "nice places."  They're not the most exciting, but they're both more exciting than random people from California or New York would assume, IMO.

You say they get a lot of hate, but this poll suggests they are pretty popular. Compare the results to, say, Kansas or Missouri.
