I haven't seen much discussion on this.  I hope the Trump admin follows through on this threat now that Pence has drawn a "red line" so to speak.  Would be one of the few good foreign policy moves this administration has made!  Sanction the hell out of Erdogan and his cronies, please.

Out of curiosity what spurious reason did the Turks cook up to detain this guy?

I have to admit, Trump is right this time. Sanctions against the want-to-be-sultan should have been imposed a long time ago because of various crimes he committed: bombing the kurds, imprisoning journalists and the opposition as well as colaberating with ISIS members. I wish the German government would do likewise and not talk too nice when he throws German citizens in jail with phony arguments and compares Merkel with nazis. And the Turks who support this fellow while enjoying freedom and democracy in countries of the European Union where the rule of law means something should rethink again whether they're staying in the right place.

Turkey's been holding a NASA scientist for two years now, but since he's a Muslim and/or a scientist he hasn't been of much interest to Trump.

Figured that’d be why but I was curious if Erdogan had come up with any new and exciting bogeymen rather than sticking to the old script

This was long overdue. Ever since Erdogan had his bodyguards beat up American protesters on American soil last year, Turkey should have been punished.

Except he isn’t being punished for that or his numerous other more significantly punishment worthy offenses. Instead, he’s being threatened with sanctions because of an Evangelical pastor.

Didn't the Orange Clown just praise Erdogan at the NATO meeting?

It's the straw that broke the camel's back.

It's the selective hipocrisy behind this that's heavy enough to break four camel's backs.

Europe might not care that Christians are being slaughtered around the world but I’m glad the United states still does.

Erdogan probably does deserve sanctions but leave it to Trump to make it about something like this, not that it isn't a problem, but it's a bit late to the party to finally do this.
