Has any presidential investigation since Lewinsky reached this level? The only one I think might would have been Valerie Plame, but even that was more of an investigation of Cheney than Bush.

He'd be negligent if he didn't impanel one?  How's a prosecutor supposed to get indictments, pull one out of his ass?

This is an expected part. A coup can't occur until the tanks roll out the barracks. Now Trump has to fight back - the Deep State has been busy today.

A DC jury is unlikely to be made up of pro-Trump people.

How is Trump going to fight back? He's near-incapable of doing real work under the best of circumstances, and he's spending the next weeks on vacation. Lies about his golf game and deranged tweets won't save him. The only question is if Muller can find anything that crosses the line from questionable into criminal.

The next 24 hours is going to be interesting. Finally, Trump is going to fall.

Let's not get too confident.

While I've always said I don't expect him to last out his term, this is going to be a slow grind. I expect *at least* six more months of Trump, and if I had to put money down on his departure and I'd bet somewhere in Nov 2018-January 2019. (I hope I'm wrong and he goes earlier.)

Oh I completely understand. I'm not saying Trump is going to be impeached in 24 hours (which is outrageously absurd to hope for) I'm just waiting for the reactions from the GOP shills, the media, and the big POSOTUS himself.

So, have many Democrats here let the idea of President Pence sink in yet?

I actually think President Pence is an inevitability. Even if Trump manages to survive his full term, I bet this occurs:

Nov 3, 2020: Trump loses in a landslide.
Nov 2020-Jan 2021: Trump throws one of his fits, whines constantly about the media, makes accusations of vote fraud and everything under the sun, meanwhile people in Congress and various prosecutors hint he might be facing charges.
Jan. 18, 2021: Trump resigns, President Pence sworn in.
Jan. 19, 2021: President Pence pardons Trump and all his cronies.
Jan. 20, 2021: New President sworn in.

What a way to kneecap Republicans going into a favorable 2022 midterm.

Who's to say that he won't get thrown in the slammer too? Pence is just as deplorable as the orange mannequin but at least he understands how government works and has a little bit of a conscience, unlike the Dear Leader. Indeed, Pence is a dangerous theocrat and a threat to civil liberties for anyone who's not a far-right conservative WASP Christian heterosexual male, but at least he'll restore our eroding image to our allies around the world before we totally become the Sarah Palin of the world.

It's definitely sank in for me. I've been expecting that he'll be President by early 2019 at the very latest.

Personally, I'm just fine with a President Pence. At this point, I just want some semblance of sanity back, and every day Trump spends in office is another day he continues to screw something up, whether its trust in our institutions, or our image abroad, or any number of problems he doesn't solve because his administration is nothing but pure, unadulterated incompetence. Plus, from my POV, with the way things are going, there is a good chance we will have a Democratic House majority starting in 2019, so if that were the case, it's not like he do too much since we could mostly stall out his agenda in Congress.
