Can I also just point out, there is no word for "the" in Ukrainian or Russian?

In the German-speaking countries, everyone says "Die Ukraine" (the Ukraine) or "... in der Ukraine" (in the Ukraine).

Yes, it's proper in German, but not in English. No other country has a "the" in front of it. It was popularized by Stalin to imply that it wasn't a real country, the term literally means "the borderlands", basically the implication is that Ukraine is just a region of Russia. Ukrainians find it HIGHLY offensive, but it's still used by Anglophone Putinbots to this day.

THE United States of America... THE United Kingdom... THE netherlands... THE Phillipines... THE Czech Republic...

Once again those are all descriptive names. This would be akin to "the Canada", "the France", "the Spain", "the India", etc.

The Gambia?

That refers to the river.

Belize and Jordan are named after rivers, and neither has a definite article in its name.

I mean, it's an HP thing to do, but it's usually just an honest mistake.

As a German it sounds so wrong to my ears. Those missing articles is something I will never be able to get used to.
We say "the Ukraine", "the Switzerland", "the Iran", "the Iraq", "the Sudan", "the Slovakia", "the Turkey", "the Yemen", "the Congo", "the Lebanon", "the Niger" and "the Chad". (It has something to do with their grammatical genders.)
Btw, "the USA" is a plurale tantum in the German language, which actually makes more sense.

Who says "the ukraine" these days anyway? Its from a completely different time, so I don't see how the name would continue to stick?

Olds will likely continue to say it with "the". It was written that way throughout the Cold War, so if you learned it that way, it tends to stick. Even if you later learned to say it without "the", the article is probably still in mind even if not spoken.

Wait, I never hear:  In United States today, blah blah blah......it's always "In the United States, or in the U.S."......it's always "the"......so what's "the" problem, Red?

That's because the United States doesn't really have a name beyond a "description" of the country, the shorthand used is "America" but this is quite inaccurate. Same with "the United Kingdom" or while not a country "the European Union". But no one ever says "the Canada", "the Mexico", "the Germany", "the France", etc.

THE Netherlands

THE Seychelles

THE Czech Republic

THE Congo (both DR and R)

THE Phillipines

Oh, and literally for Canadians only

The States (Cuz CANADA IS PART OF MURICA TOO!)  Oh don't worry Canada, we'll make sure you feel *included* Wink

There are reasons people might not challenge calling it "The Ukraine"... if Ukrainians think "the" makes them a part of Russia, then it's because they feel like a part of Russia despite not wanting to be.
