Actively trying to gut the bill of rights is not good optics, especially when your party claims to be "prochoice" or "socially liberal". Even more so when a few of the more vocal SJW kooks are promoting the idea that the mere existence of certain ideas are "violence" that must be stamped out.

If we ban guns, how will the proletariat overthrow the capitalist oppressors?

Lol he pushed a gun control bill after Sandy Hook. One of the worst political errors of his Presidency.

I mean, he pushed a bill that would make 100% of gun sales subject to a background check rather than 98%. And over 90% of Americans supported him.

How Democrats never capitalized on how outlandishly extreme Republicans were on Manchin-Toomey is beyond me.

Because it's a non-existent problem.  There is no such thing as a gun show loophole.  Manchin Toomey was a defacto person to person transfer ban.  And it had a Feinatein added Assault Weapons ban amendment as well.

I always feel the Democrats should compromise on this issue. Pass some sort of universal background checks for guns + ammo + microstamping (the three policies, according to Lancet, that would cause a significant decrease in gun deaths), and in return pass a law that guts the various half-hearted magazine restrictions etc passed at a state level, speeds up UBC's so they don't inconvenience people and various other odds and ends. Always seems a waste of time for me going after rifle owners - who the hell commits crimes (spree killers aside) with rifles?

If the Dems couldn't get it passed after Sandy Hook it ain't happening.  It might sound good on the campaign trail but in reality there's no way.
