A final decision on the fate of the highly controversial .xxx domain, which was intended to be reserved for online pornography, will not happen until September.
http://news.zdnet.com/2100-9588_22-5835702.html

My opinion is this would be good IF all pornographic sites would be required to eventually move to the .xxx domains. Whether this is approved or not, there will still be pornography on the internet. In many cases, people accidently come accross pornagraphy. If all porn was restricted to only the .xxx domain, then it would make it easier for people who don't want to look at porn to avoid it.

I would oppose any proposal under which the government requires the use of this domain. I don't think that the government should interfere with the Internet in such a manner.

Otherwise, I see nothing wrong with the idea.

The government should NOT be policing the Internet!  This is a stupid idea and is unenforcable - the people already own the domains, and simply need to change the registration to another country, and they can't be traced.

This would do nothing to reduce pornography, as much of it is hosted internationally anyway.

The domain itself - whatever.  If it's an option, it's an option.  Maybe it will help a bit, but it will probably just become fertile new ground for a registration bidding war.

Parents should be responsible and institute content control on their computers, as this will never cease being a problem.

Stupid idea.  It's upwards of impossible to force owners of every single pornography site out there to get a .xxx domain name.  I don't know when politicians will realize that the internet is so ethereal and global in nature that the content itself is basically completely unregulatable.

I support the .xxx domain.  I have no problem with internet pornography, but it's really annoying to have it pop-up all over the place when you don't want it to.  It should be easy to avoid if you don't want to see it, and hopefully the .xxx will help do that.

It would work if every single pornography site relocated itself to a .xxx domain, but the fact of the matter is that tons of sites out there get you to visit purely by blatantly tricking you into clicking a link.  I don't think they'll want a domain extension that says "hi, I'm a pornography site".

Right, these are the sites we should be getting rid of.  If a site is pornography, it should have the .xxx domain, and it shouldn't try to trick you.

And it's not like movies where there are things of legitimate artistic value that could get commercially cursed with the equivalent of an NC-17 rating.  The overwhelming majority of sites with pornographic content on the internet are there only for the purpose of providing pornographic content.

The only problem is that actually forcing these sites to do so is kind of easier said than done.  Finding out who actually owns a site can often be ridiculously difficult.

I think the .xxx domain is a good idea.  Rather than having porn all over the Internet, we can keep it and the spyware that accompanies it more cocentrated in a specific place.  It might also make the Internet safer for young children.

While I agree with you in theory, I'm getting the sense that nobody is reading my posts.

Pornography should be available everywhere, and completely unrestricted.

As Gabu states, there's no way to enforce a requirement anyways.

Saw that one coming.  You think kids should get exposed to it before reaching puberty.

Strangely enough, some do.  Some also want age consent laws removed as well as teaching kids in middle/high schools not how to abstain from sex or use protection, but what ways to enjoy sex without penetration.

I said this would be a good idea, but because of the lack of enforcement on the Internet it would be extremely hard if not impossible to implement.

Well, wouldn't that make it not be a good idea, or do we have differing definitions of what a "good idea" is?

For me, an idea is not good if it's completely impractical and impossible to do.

I think it is a good concept, it's just not feasible.

I don't see a problem with some government regulation of the internet, within reason.
I mean do we really want those who send spam, viruses, and those who make defamatory remarks to be allowed to do those things?

Thought police? Freedom hater.

Don't you know?  The government is watching us all through the Internet!  It's like a giant telescreen!

Right, anyone who is against total chaos and anarchy hates freedom,
makes sense to me.

Anyone who supports outlawing 'defamatory remarks' hates freedom.

I’d love it if all porn sites moved to an .xxx domain, that way I wouldn’t have to worry about clicking a link off an old page and it being bought out by some stupid porn site.  Though, it is, sadly, a pretty impractical idea.
