I'm curious as to what Cheney's feelings on Vietnam were, and if that influenced his desire for a war in Iraq.

He's pro-war, unless he has to serve himself. Classic chickenhawk.

I doubt any of us are in a position to know, and I doubt even more that any of us are going to even refer to any biography of him, so this doesn't belong on the History board. Moving to IP so the haters can hate ad the lovers can love.

In The World According to Dick Cheney, he said he supported what the US was doing in Vietnam and became conservative in reaction to the student protests at UW-Madison.

It comes as no surprise that Cheney would support a war like that and get deferments for it.  Once a chickenhawk, always a chickenhawk.

I'm glad my uncle took your place and died because of it, Dick.

look at that video I linked, its scary how right he was on the consequences of invading Iraq.Yet in 2003 he advised Bush to invade anyway.

As long as we're citing actual books, in Sean Wilentz' The Reagan Era, he described Rumsfeld as initially dovish, and as having been persuaded toward the hawkish or neoconservative position by Cheney during their time in the Nixon/Ford White House. Now, Rumsfeld's own autobiography (Known & Unknown) didn't paint a particularly dovish picture of Rumsfeld, but he did make reference to having been sort of dumbfounded by Johnson's apparent floundering on Vietnam and the President's antagonistic style with which he addressed legislators. I haven't read In My Time to know Cheney's retroactive scoop on Vietnam, but I think that there is sufficient evidence available from both my perusals as well as anything cited above--not to mention general conventional wisdom as to Cheney, his biography, and his work in the Nixon and Ford White Houses--to infer that he supported the war.

Maybe then he was stating HW's opinion and not his own?
