Bush set two records today, just not in the poll.

He set a record low approval rating in SUSA, 41% approve, 55% disapprove.
He set a record high disapproval rating in Rasmussen, 43% approve, 56% disapprove

Where Bush really gets destroyed in Rasmussen is the break down

21% strongly approve
22% somewhat approve
15% somewhat disapprove
41% strongly disapprove

I'd assume many of those who dislike him, intensely dislike him. That's the main tenet of polarisation.

In other news, regular unleaded is $2.69/gal.

Not that there's any relation between those two stories.

Shockingly, I'm in agreement with States on this one.

Yes, because people at work always want to discuss politics with me..and I have to explain that to them everyday. Especially to the few dumb populists we have where I work.

Anyone remember who holds the record for the lowest approval rating of any modern President?

Answer: Harry Truman

Anyway, just another poll that I pay no mind to.  Gas prices are up now, the situation in Iraq has not changed much, it's a full moon... so people are naturally going to blame Bush.

Fact:  Gas is high because of China.

Fact:  The Iraq situation is not about to falling apart, inspite of what the media would like you to believe.  Everyone I have talked to who was there and not a Reservist, or in the National Gaurd says that things are getting better all the time there.

Fact:  It's August, nothing happens so the media goes to these sideshow stories like this woman who changed her mind 180 degrees about Bush is only one year.

This is true.  You can't blame Bush or the Iraq War for high gas prices.  It's like blaming Carter for the energy crisis of 1978.

You know the media has gone downhill when the only news reported has to do with people missing in Aruba, child abductions, and runaway brides.  Cable news is messed up, way too much sensationalism.  Old-fashioned network news is much better.

hahaha . . . even still, you have to read the news starting on page 8 to get past all the overly-hyped stuff these days.  Too many people want the entertainment-style news which tends to crowd out the real stuff.

...which explains why joke networks and newspapers like Fox News, the New York Post, and Newsday are so popular.

Admittedly, I know only a single person stationed in Iraq. He says that there's little hope among his soldiers that they'll be able to make a lasting impact there.

Iraq is a long ways from falling apart, but it's also an even longer ways from what Bush said he wanted to accomplish.

Yes, that's why I read the Washington Post, Richmond Times-Dispatch, and Wall Street Journal.  Good mix of views.  The Times-Dispatch is a respectable conservative-leaning paper, unlike the Washington Times, which was founded by the Moonies and is just plain awful.

Bush is getting blamed because he started a war in the middle east for no good reason.

The lowest approval rating on record for any sitting President came in July 1980 - Gallup recorded Carter's approval at 21%. And of course, Ted Kennedy challenged Carter for the Dem nomination in 1980 and most polls in 1979 showed that Democrats preferred Kennedy to Carter, some by a pretty wide margin, but when the chips were down they defected to Carter at the last minute and he got enough delegates to be nominated once again with Walter Mondale as VP.

By the sound of it, Ted would have gotten the nomination if not for Chappaquiddick.

Yeah, I think the skeletons scared a lot of people away and Jimmy hit away on the establishment of the Dept. of Energy and the major peace agreement of '79 between el-Sadat and Begin. Hey, why not, it was the late '70s and into 1980: another federal dept. and a major peace agreement. If that doesn't win 'em back, nothin' will. Plus, I don't know, I think Ted was just really trying to stir up the pot and try to excite people. Had they nominated Ted, it would have been about a 48-state victory for Reagan instead of, oh, a 45-state victory. Smiley
