One thing I've always wondered was whether LBJ pushed more to Kennedy than just Texas. He was certainly popular, but was he popular enough to win more than just his home state? It definitely had the effect of consolidating the Dixiecrat wing behind Kennedy in 1960 methinks.

I think Clinton's pick of Al Gore helped cinch Tennessee in Clinton's column and helped Clinton (two Southerners on the ticket) to win a few Southern states and at least be competitive with Bush in the South.

Muskie gave Humphrey Maine in 1968.

Mondale kept Minnesota in Carter's column in 1980.

Gore gave Clinton Tennessee in 1992 and 1996.

Yes, but I'm sure the Shivers/Connally wing of the TX Dems would have openly backed Nixon without Johnson on the ticket.

I've read that Richard Nixon picked Spiro Agnew because he was Southern enough to win Southern votes and yet not too Southern to scare off Northern voters.

What about Pence?  Not for one state in particular, but for suburban (often evangelical) conservatives in 2016?  That could have easily "saved" Florida, Wisconsin, and maybe Pennsylvania for Trump.

Good point. It'd be hard to pick one state that he picked up for Trump but he definitely had the effect of consolidating the GOP base around Trump.
