No googling; please don't look at other's responses-it'll take the fun out of it for yourself.

15 questions; not all hard, but some are. Some will be easy if you've read my (perhaps far too numerous) posts on stuff relating to Australia, some will require other basic knowledge of australian culture, history and geography.

Good luck, mate!

1. The Swan River flows through which Australian state capital?

2. What are 'The Ashes'?

3. Which states bank the Murray River?

4. Who has the balance of power in the federal Senate?

5. Which European (re)discovered Australia? (Both answers accepted, bonus point for one of them in particular)

6. In which city would you find the suburb of Toorak?
a) Melbourne
b) Adelaide
c) Sydney
d) Perth

7. What is the primary sport of Tasmania?
a) Rugby League
b) Australian Rules
c) Cricket
d) Rugby Union

8. Who is Premier of Queensland? What Party is he from (half point each)

9. From which political party does the Prime Minister come from? What is his name? (half point each)

10. The name "Macquarie" is often found in titles of places, universities, institutions, etc.; who was 'Macquarie'?

11. In which state or territory would you find Gundagai? (half point)
In which state or territory would you find Wonthaggi? (half point)

12. What are 'aspirationals'?  (half point)
What are 'doctor's wives'? (half point)

13. What is the most popular Australian beer, amongst Australians?

14. In which city would you find the suburb of Leichardt?
a) Canberra
b) Brisbane
c) Melbourne
d) Sydney

15. Who was the Australian Prime Minister immediately preceeding the current PM?

There may be a sequel, if there is enough interest.

1. The Swan River flows through which Australian state capital?
Perth

2. What are 'The Ashes'?
As I understand it, it is the prize being played for at the moment between England and Australia is cricket. I believe it's held annually, though my knowledge of anything to do with cricket could only charitably be described as sketchy.

3. Which states bank the Murray River?
South Australia and New South Wales?

4. Who has the balance of power in the federal Senate?
No idea.

5. Which European (re)discovered Australia? (Both answers accepted, bonus point for one of them in particular)
Willem Janz? I think. James Cook, I suppose could also be considered a contender.

6. In which city would you find the suburb of Toorak?
No idea, Adelaide?

7. What is the primary sport of Tasmania?
Again, no idea, Australian Rules?

8. Who is Premier of Queensland? What Party is he from (half point each)
No point even guessing.

9. From which political party does the Prime Minister come from? What is his name? (half point each)
John Howard, Liberal

10. The name "Macquarie" is often found in titles of places, universities, institutions, etc.; who was 'Macquarie'?
Don't know.

11. In which state or territory would you find Gundagai? (half point)
In which state or territory would you find Wonthaggi? (half point)
Don't know so I'll guess Queensland for both.

12. What are 'aspirationals'?  (half point)
What are 'doctor's wives'? (half point)
Don't know.

13. What is the most popular Australian beer, amongst Australians?
If the advertising campaign they use is anything to go by, and indeed its fairly probable that it isn't I'll go with Fosters.

14. In which city would you find the suburb of Leichardt?
Sydney?

15. Who was the Australian Prime Minister immediately preceeding the current PM?
Paul Keating

1. The Swan River flows through which Australian state capital?

Perth

2. What are 'The Ashes'?

Cricket tournament between England and Australia. Been going on since the 19th Century. Over the past decade or so has been totally dominated by Australia, this year's series is the closest for a loooong time

3. Which states bank the Murray River?

forms the border between NSW and Victoria. Finishes in SA

4. Who has the balance of power in the federal Senate?

Usually the Democrats, or what's left of them

5. Which European (re)discovered Australia? (Both answers accepted, bonus point for one of them in particular)

Some dutch guy (Tasman?) and Cook (from Great Ayton, North Riding of Yorkshire)

6. In which city would you find the suburb of Toorak?
a) Melbourne
Very posh IIRC

7. What is the primary sport of Tasmania?
c) Cricket

Aussie Rules Football is the biggest in winter though. IIRC Fishing is the biggest in terms of actual participation

8. Who is Premier of Queensland? What Party is he from (half point each)

Peter Beattie, ALP

9. From which political party does the Prime Minister come from? What is his name? (half point each)

John Howard, Liberal

10. The name "Macquarie" is often found in titles of places, universities, institutions, etc.; who was 'Macquarie'?

Some egomaniac of a Governer General (or similer colonial post). When around naming everything that moved after himself.

11. In which state or territory would you find Gundagai? (half point)
In which state or territory would you find Wonthaggi? (half point)

One is in NSW. I *think* the other is in Victoria, but I'm not entirely sure

12. What are 'aspirationals'?  (half point)
What are 'doctor's wives'? (half point)

Ah... I dimly recall these as being groups of voters? "aspirationals" being upwardly mobile skilled working class/lower middle class outer-suburban voters (especially in West Sydney). Doctors wives are... er... the more swingable partners of Liberal voting professionals?

13. What is the most popular Australian beer, amongst Australians?

Not sure

14. In which city would you find the suburb of Leichardt?
d) Sydney (I think)

15. Who was the Australian Prime Minister immediately preceeding the current PM?

Paul Keating

Al, you're all right, except for 4-either "The Nationals" or "The Coalition" woild have been acceptable; the dutch guy was Dirk Hartog Janszoon is another possible answer, but hes mot fully verified; Macquarie was an early Governor of NSW (i'll give you that one); aspirationals are sorta of your Kaths and Kims, your description will do just fine though; Aussies drink VB (Victoria Bitter).

I thought Aussie Rules was the premier sport of Tasmania full stop. I'm fairly sure it's bigger then cricket, anyway-if not in participation, then in followers. I'll give you half a point for that anyway.

12 and a half points-impressive! you pass with flying colours.

Haha, lucky draw in the third - you would not have caught up with that remaining wicket to fall.. England last won the Ashes the year I was born - 1987. Considering your team is supposed to be far and away the best in the World, I think we are performing better Wink.

Nope; Cricket in the Summer, Aussie Rules in the Winter. Both are huge down there though.

Slightly more Cricket followers than Aussie Rules followers. Interestingly quite a lot of Tasmanian cricketers play club cricket over here in the winter (our summer).

England, I feel, have not done as well as they should have in the second and third tests. In the second, they certainly need not have let Australia come as close as they did. They failed to clean up the tail properly at Edgbaston, and did so again at Old Trafford.

In deference to my distant cousins, (slightly different spelling) I have to go with the N.S.W. staple Toohey's.  Too bad it is now owned by a Kiwiw conglomerate.

Ok well being from New Zealand I should, theoretically get the best results

Queensland and New South Wales?

4. Who has the balance of power in the federal Senate?

I thought the Lib-Nat coalition had a majority now, but as far as I know isn't it the Democrats?

Matthew Flinders? I know he had something to do with Australia?

a) Melbourne
b) Adelaide
c) Sydney
d) Perth

Melbourne?

7. What is the primary sport of Tasmania?
a) Rugby League

John Howard, Liberal Party

10. The name "Macquarie" is often found in titles of places, universities, institutions, etc.; who was 'Macquarie'?

11. In which state or territory would you find Gundagai? (half point)
In which state or territory would you find Wonthaggi? (half point)

I'm gonna go with Queensland for both, as it seems to me that there are a lot of Aboriginal named places there.

12. What are 'aspirationals'?  (half point)

No idea

What are 'doctor's wives'? (half point)

Midwives?

13. What is the most popular Australian beer, amongst Australians?

Canberra
