Interesting.  I'll note that of those five vulnerable Republicans, only Chafee, Santorum, and I guess DeWine really have anything to worry about.  Of the three Democrats, all of them seem pretty safe at the moment, but only because the GOP can't seem to find anybody who's likely to beat them.

The ME Senators are definitely going strong, but Obama is a good position. While she doesn't come close to Obama's ratings, Hilliary does have an 80-14 rating amoung blacks. The bottom 5 are Republicans, 4 of them with negative margins, but hey, they all have better ratings than Bush.

If the democratic party here can get its s-h-i-t together, Dewine is done. I seem to remember him running against John Glenn in this state a few times and losing badly then. I've said it before and I'll say it again: Voinovich is untouchable. I have to admit, though, Conrad surprises me. I thought he was ready to be out in 2006. He's running against the popular governor up there(I presume; can't remember his name right now). I've heard that Kyle has problems in Arizona and the Democrats could take advantage. I think it would be crushing for the GOP if Santorum loses; I'm not convinced that'll happen.

Why do senators have such higher approval ratings when compared to Governors?

I don't think Governor Hoeven has announced his intentions to run.

Why do senators have such higher approval ratings when compared to Governors?

Because they're not in the spotlight and regular residents in these states probably can't tell you a damn thing about them unless there's a scandal.

This is mainly because DeWine is only winning Republicans 52-33.

Now take a look at Voinovich's stats:

Republicans: 49-42 approval
Democrats: 48-43 approval
Independents: 47-37 disapproval

Weird, eh?

Senators Snowe, Collins, Chaffee, and Ben Nelson all poll better with the opposite party than their own.

That's why 54% of moderates disapprove and 33% approve.

I was actually under the impression that Dayton and Coleman were two of the most hated human beings in the Senate, but they are actually approved more than disapproved, which seems a little screwy to me...

Santorum's ratings seem to have collapsed in Western PA. Any reason for this?

Internals could be quirky.  The make up for it overall due to the overall partisan breakdown, but one area could oversample Dems & undersample Reps while another oversamples Reps & undersamples Dems.  So when they take the partisan breakdown into account they may do so for the entire state not so much for each section.

However a reson could very well be social security, which is something Bush #'s on have really collapsed on>  Western PA being a populist area, probably isn't to thrilled with Santorum being one of Bush's strongest S.S backers.

I like those Santorum and DeWine numbers.  Nice to see Kent Conrad and Byron Dorgan doing well.

Santorum's ratings seem to have collapsed in Western PA. Any reason for this?

Cyberschool scandal!

Could you explain that?

Here, brought to you by the magic that is Wikipedia:

In November 2004, a controversy erupted over education costs for the Senator's children. Santorum's legal address is in Penn Hills, Pennsylvania, a suburb of Pittsburgh, but he lives most of the year at his home in Leesburg, Virginia near Washington, DC. Santorum's five older children received education through the Western Pennsylvania Cyber Charter School with 80% of tuition costs paid by the Penn Hills School District.

At a meeting in November 2004, the Penn Hills School District announced that it did not believe Santorum met the qualifications for residency status since he and his family spend most of the year in Virginia. They demanded repayment of tuition costs totaling $100,000.

Supporters of the Senator claim that the controversy is politically motivated as the school board is controlled by Democrats and Erin Vecchio, the school board member who first publicly raised the issue, is the chair of the local Democratic Party. They also claim that since Santorum votes in Penn Hills and pays property and school taxes there, he is entitled to the same privileges as any other Penn Hills resident.

After the controversy erupted, Santorum said he would make other arrangements for his children's education, but insists he does not owe the school board any back tuition. In early 2005, both sides agreed to work out a settlement outside the court system. A state appointed hearing officer set a deadline of May 9, 2005 for the parties to submit information relating to the case.

On July 8, 2005, a Pennsylvania state hearing officer ruled that the Penn Hills School District had not filed objections to Santorum's residency in a timely manner and dismissed the complaint, even though the district did follow the guidelines set by the hearing officer in May. Santorum hailed the ruling as a victory against what he termed "baseless and politically motivated charges." He told reporters, "No one's children -- and especially not small, school-age children -- should be used as pawns in the 'politics of personal destruction'."
--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Santorum supporters will tell you that this was a cheap ploy by Democrats to make him look bad.
