Well, by "serious", I meant it's occasionally brought up by elected/appointed government officials, not necessarily in the US, mostly on the political fringes. Obviously, I don't consider the policy itself a serious solution. Even if it worked, it's not something we should endorse or celebrate.

The Internet provides a rich trove of old knowledge and wisdom. It also serves to disseminate old hoaxes, slanders, and superstitions best left in the Memory Hole.

The story seems to defame one of America's greatest generals. General Pershing is not around to refute it, so he can't deny it directly.

It just does not make sense. Bullets are not lubricated with animal grease of any kind. Pershing was a typical American general who recognized that the surest way to get peace was to ensure that the enemy had nothing about which to fight.
