     No, the police must keep the peace for protestors and counter-protestors to make their cases. If they cannot maintain an orderly state of affairs wherein people are able to speak peaceably, then we are failing as a nation.

This is definitely the correct answer. The right to protest is a fundamental human right.

No, but the police should enforce the law when stuff does get violent. At Berkeley, the police didn't do crap.
