Would Golisano running yet again hurt or help Weld?  I'd imagine some Golisano supporters voted for Spitzer in that poll.

Hurt.  Golisano is fairly conservative (more so than Weld, especially on social issues) so Weld could be hurt some by upstate Republicans

Right now I see Golisano running against Weld in the primary. I'm not sure if he would still run after that.

I'd have rather seen him stay in MA and run against Ted Kennedy (even though he'd still lose-I'd still be glad to support him).

Not my Teddy!

I hate how we put so much faith and trust in polls. Polling does not put into effect what will happen in a campaign. I think it comes down to the candidate's personality, that's my idea of, a least, Iowa state politcs. Will Weld do well against pitzer. If he campaings as hard asd he did in 1994 for the MA Governorship, then I think he will do well.

Too bad Colin Powell isn't the New York GOP's candidate though. Wink

I can't believe there's not a better GOP politician in the nation's third-largest state.

Why do state parties continue to import candidates?  Other than Hillary Clinton, when is the last time an out-of-stater has won an election?

Weld wasn't imported. He's lived here for the past five years and he also grew up here. It's not out of nowhere like Hillary.

The NYGOP almost had nothing to do with Weld I believe, He entered the race on his own, which is why some NY Republicans(like State Senator Bruno) are pissing and moaning.

Weld is as good as the NYGOP is gonna get in this race.

Great idea on DU: During any debate, ask Weld what baseball team he roots for. If he says Yankees or Mets, he looks like a cheap panderer. If he says Red Sox, well that won't go over too well.

Summer of 2001, heat of NYC mayoral election:

Reporter: "Do you root for the yankees or mets?"

bloomberg: "I'm from Boston."

Bloomberg won of course, and then became a yankee fan in october of 2003.

It was a bit of a joke of course.

Although there actually are people who do vote on that stuff sadly. I am completely sure that if a candidate came out as a huge Packers fan and his opponent claimed to be a Vikings fan, my dad would vote for the Vikings fan based on that alone. I suspect one of my supervisors at work would too.

A new Rasmussen poll shows Spitzer beating Weld 55-20%.
