for example Heidi Heitkamp won the attorney general race both in 1992 and 1996 by a landslide and still list the governors race to Hoeven by 10 points in 2000, and Allison Lundergan Grimes lost the Kentucky senate race by 15 and won SoS by 3. So my question is, does a large win as a ag or SoS really signify anything?

People are far more to split ticket at the state level than the federal level. Look at Bill Weld. He won his reelection bid with over 70% of the vote and only came within like 8 points of Kerry. State politics allow more for more ideological diversity which allows candidates to differentiate themselves.

As for Heidikamp, she was actually leading against Hoeven for most of the race until it came out that she was undergoing surgery for breast cancer. She really should have won that race, she was and still is super popular there.
