After Nazi Germany and the Confederacy, who are the biggest "villains" to the US?

How would you rank them?

I'd say the Soviet Union... then North Korea... then possibly Iran.
IF you count non-state actors, then there's Al Qaeda/ISIS/Taliban.

Once upon a time, it would have been the United Kingdom and the Native Americans, but not for over 100 years.
In the past, it could have also been Japan and Vietnam and Cuba and Saddam Hussein's Iraq as well, but not really anymore.

I'm not sure China, or the current incarnation of Russian government, or Syria, are there yet. Pakistan and Saudi Arabia are viewed with suspicion, but not near the level of Nazi Germany, I think.

Soviet Union. No other nation comes close, except for maybe Al-Qaeda and similar groups, and Great Britain if you're willing to go back that far.

If the Soviet Union is definitely #3, who would come after them?

This. Imperial Japan is a close second.

People's Republic of China?

We may be just lucky that the 1915 Klan, which presaged much of the essence of European fascism, disintegrated as a political force just before the 1929 Stock Market Crash. A Klan-dominated America in the 1930s could have been as horrible as the Nazis.

As non-political entities -- syndicates of organized crime.

Donald Trump and the Deplorables.
This. Imperial Japan is a close second.

There's a silver lining to Donald Trump: he may force us to do some soul-searching. We may become a more honest, rational, and decent people after experiencing him.

Thug Japan kicked America hard all the way from Guam and the Philippines to near Midway... I can only imagine how a Japanese conquest of Hawaii after victory at Midway (Honolulu is still closer to California  than it is to any part of Australia, New Zealand, or Asia) would have established a Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity that encompassed culturally-European Australia and New Zealand as well... and made them Asian after genocide.

The Soviet Union is definitively number 1, followed by the Nazis, then the British, then the Confederates. The umbrella of Islamic terrorism is a distant fifth.
I don't care that you guys hate Middle Easterners, but Islamic extremism isn't more of a threat than Imperial Japan was.

They killed 3,000 Americans on 9/11 and we've been at war with them since 2001. They are big villains in our history and still a threat to this day.

Have they killed 161,000 of our troops?

Somehow the CSA was a greater threat to the US than Imperial Japan or the Soviet Union. I'm not trying to jump to the Confederacy's defense, but the Confederates didn't want to conquer the United States, while the Imperial Japanese and the Soviet Union did (albeit the Soviets wanted the U.S. to become a communist state rather than be a part of the USSR).

Threat wise, USSR is number one out of any enemy (since 1783) as a nuclear war with them would have destroyed the entire world and there were many close calls.

Evil wise USSR is number two after the nazis

This is a good point -- I would put them ahead of Al Qaeda, but still behind Britain.

1. Yes, the CSA was a greater threat than either. The remaining US would be much, much weaker and probably not become as much of an international player, be more like Brazil or Mexico or Canada in international influence. It would have also kept the idea of slavery alive well into the 20th century, maybe even still around now, and less of a taboo globally.

2. This isn't about greatest threats.

Threat wise, USSR is number one out of any enemy (since 1783) as a nuclear war with them would have destroyed the entire world and there were many close calls.

This isn't about greatest threat, or most evil.

It's about who's the biggest villains in US popular culture.

The Soviet Union is definitively number 1, followed by the Nazis, then the British, then the Confederates. The umbrella of Islamic terrorism is a distant fifth.
I don't know anyone who sees the British as evil villains in modern times. Or the Soviets worse than the Nazis.

If this thread is about popular culture, then Hell, there are tons of films portraying the Comfederates as, if not heroes, at least sympathetic antagonists. I did not watch the entirety of North and South in high school history, but, based on the first few episodes, it pitching the Covil War as a regrettable break among friends is not hard to imagine. The Nazis rarely receive such pity.

For the first nearly-half existence of the United States, Britain was pretty much an existential threat to the country, though they've been de-villianized since.

Under Stalin they were clearly more evil than the confederacy and slightly more then al qaeda . Post Stalin pre Gorbachev no they weren't as bad as al -qaeda but same level evil as the confederacy.
