If this is a strategy, it will only work if the D nominee in 2020 is just as unacceptable to voters as Hillary was. This, along with his name-calling showed a certain segment of the electorate that he was "tough" and "would fight for them". Unfortunately, if Ds want to defeat Trump in 2020, they'll probably have to nominate a candidate who's willing to use some of Trump's own tactics against him.
