Whom would you prefer to see sit out of the 2020 election? And why? It can be based on dislike for the person or the belief that they are unelectable. I would prefer we left out celebrities (too obvious), unless you have some unique insight to provide.

Personally I would like to see both Elizabeth Warren and Kamala Harris sit out. Not because I personally dislike either one.

Warren is too polarizing of a figure right now, and I don't believe she could expand the map much or help down ballot candidates. If a less progressive figure is at the top of the ticket (like Bullock) she might make a good VP choice.

While I like Harris and believe she is definitely a future star, a 2020 run just seems too forced. I think she should do a good job building herself a reputation in the Senate, or maybe even a cabinet post, and then make a run. If Dems lose in 2020 she should definitely run in 2024. (I also wouldn't object to her being a VP choice for someone like Sherrod Brown in 2020)

Right off the bat, I'll say Hillary Clinton.

I think she has accumulated too much political baggage by this point (and this has nothing to do with how true the allegations against her are) to be a viable candidate in any future election.

Booker and Cuomo from the establishment side, Sanders and Gabbard from the 'Progressive' side. It would polarize the party too much. Warren shouldn't run either, she's not a good general election candidate. Of course, no Hillary Clinton too, but I feel like it's quite obvious.

Hillary Clinton is the most obvious answer. She managed to lose to Donald Freakin' Trump, enough said.

Counter: the longer you are in the House or Senate, the more undesirable votes you have that can be used against you and the harder it is to run as an outsider candidate. Obama was new and exciting in 2008 because he had less than four years in political office to take hard votes (e.g., Iraq). The longer Harris waits the more D.C. baggage she picks up.

From the D perspective I hope Sanders stays out because he will suck all of the oxygen out of the room and is not a good candidate. I'm a Tim Kaine fan and don't think he will run but I will also add him to the list.

Definitely Gabbard. She's very polarizing within the party and likely wouldn't be a strong candidate in the general election. I'm somewhat afraid that she will run in 2020 and get enough support from Bernie supporters to be competitive - as someone who preferred Sanders last year (albeit slightly), I don't quite understand why so many Bernie fans are so enamored with Gabbard, other than the fact that Gabbard was one of few high-ranking elected officials to endorse him.

I don't really have strong feelings on anyone else. I am questioning whether I want Warren to run, though, just out of fear that she wouldn't fare well in a general election despite my appreciation for her personally.

I left out Hillary because I honestly just thought she was obvious. I don't know anyone who actually wants her to run again. I like her, but certainly don't want her to

Lots of people, in the following categories:

Personal Dislike -- Booker, Cuomo, Gabbard
Lack of experience/too soon -- Harris, Duckworth, Castro, Moulton, Garcetti, Newsom, Kander
Lack of relevance/excitability -- Klobuchar, Warner, O'Malley, Murphy, McAuliffe, Inslee, Jerry Brown, Delaney
Age/need for a fresh face: Clinton, Biden, Sanders, Kerry, Gore
Celebrities: All

So who does that leave? Not many. Of the myriad names that have come up, there are only 4 that I would be genuinely excited about: Gillibrand, Sherrod Brown, Warren, and Franken (in that order). Beyond that, I'd maybe be okay with Bullock, Kaine, Hickenlooper, or Patrick but am pretty meh on all of them.

There's are a few delusional people on this board who seem to think Hillary would magically mop the floor with Trump in a rematch.

Democrats I don't want to run:

- Elizabeth Warren (bad candidate, the perfect target for Trump to portray Dems as elitist left-wing fellows out of touch with middle America and simply not sympathic)
- Bernard (too old, too angry, too left-wing)
- Hillary (LOL)
- Tulsi Gabbard (bad candidate)
- Martin O'Malley (uncharismatic)
- The Castro brothers (maybe VP for a white male nominee)
- Jason Kander (would make a good cabinet member)
- Tim Kaine (fine man, but too boring)
- Mark Warner (see above)
- Russ Feingold (a figure of the past)
- Terry McAuliffe (too close to Clintons)
- Andrew Cuomo (appears to be too controversal, although not a bad governor)
- Caroline Kennedy (would make a better SoS)
- Richard Blumenthal (too old and boring)

However, I'd support any of them over Trump and Pence easily.

I dislike Hillary Clinton more than any other Democratic nominee.  I've voted for more Democrats than Republicans for President, but she's the only Democrat to date I wouldn't vote for, period.

That being said, she'll be running against Donald Trump, or a Republican who upsets Trump but is stuck with his record to some extent.  She DID win the popular vote, and events could possibly move in a direction where she receives some sort of meaningful exoneration from her scandals.  It's amazing, but there aren't too many folks right now that I'd consider flat-out "unelectable".  It's as if we as a nation no longer have standards.

Cory Booker: He seems like a personally likable man, but he comes across to many, including me, as opportunistic. I think he would be the Democratic Rubio. He will likely be many people's 2nd or 3rd choice. My guess is that he can will be in the next administration's cabinet and will do more successfully as a more seasoned candidate down the road.

Elizabeth Warren: I just think she's a poor general election candidate. She's more successful as a senator and should remain there.

Tulsi Gabbard: I just see her as a cabinet member at best.

Joe Biden: As many have stated, his chance was 2016. He would not clear the field in '20, and I do not think he would win the nomination. I like Biden, and I do not want to see his career end in losing yet another nomination race. I think voters will want a new face. Hopefully the party can find a candidate who is a balance between a Kamala Harris and Bernie Sanders.
