I'm lucky to be in New Jersey right now but I'm kicking myself for not buying flood insurance on my Fort Lauderdale condo when I had the chance.

Saint-Barthélémy and Saint-Martin were essentially destroyed. According to reports, it "felt like a bomb just went off". This is terrible.

The poor communities of the isles were already suffering from the huge tourism attraction and subsequent overpricing of every commodities, as well as aggressive real estate construction.

Some changes to the likely impacts from Hurricane Irma:

By the time Hurricane Irma re-enters the United States in the Savannah-Charleston area (after leaving Florida), it will only be a category 1.  Not as bad as what Florida and the Bahamas are about to experience.

As it currently stands, here in the Jacksonville metro we shouldn't get hit too hard. The winds will probably be similar to what we received last October from Hurricane Matthew. The current projections are sustained winds of 60mph or higher for Jacksonville and for us here in St. Augustine, they should be sustained between 60-80mph. Anything can change, but it's not looking too bad for us.

The 5pm update NHC update has shifted the forecast track to the west a bit.  If this holds up (and it may change again, knock on wood), this would be pretty much a worst-case scenario for southeast Florida.

That would be awful. Miami would  get whacked by the wind and surge off the ocean for the first half, then after the eye passes it'll blow the Everglades into town. If it goes right up the middle it could easily be a major hurricane as it goes through Orlando

St Martin and the upper Leeward islands aren't out of the woods yet, as it looks like Hurricane Jose will pass over them before moving North.

Guys, I gotta say, this storm has gotten me scared.

I know people here in the Jax area who'll be staying in their mobile homes. All of them are lifelong residents. I'm concerned, but not too worried; we're just going to play it safe and evacuate. We stayed in our home in 2004 during those hurricanes, which were pretty scary, and it turned out alright. Hopefully, for our area at least, this turns out alright. I'd be extremely worried if I lived in South Florida though, especially the Miami metro or the Keys.

Guys, I gotta say, this storm has gotten me scared.

I'm nowhere near, and my relatives in Tampa Bay have turned their evacuation into a short (hopefully) vacation, but my guts knot up at what the people in the Caribbean have gone through (and Florida and elsewhere will go through). Hopefully we will see much less than a worst case.

Hurricane Jose is now a category 4 with 150 mph sustained winds:

Once it clears the Leeward islands, it should become a fish storm, though Bermuda might want to keep an eye on it:

Looks like the models now having it moving west, so (knock on wood) we'll be out of the path.  Looking better for those in coastal NC as well.

For those still in the path- stay safe.

It looks like it could be as bad as the 1935 Labor Day hurricane and follow a similar path.

Jesus Christ. Not even Katrina hit at Cat 5.

From a wiki search the last hurricane to landfall in the USA at Cat 5 strength was Andrew in 1992.

Godspeed, Floridians.

Even though Irma is scraping Cuba, it's still intensifying, they found Cat 5 winds again.

Thankfully it looks like Jose won't actually landfall on Leewards.
