But expand its application in Turkey to include adultery? Tongue

(Just kidding.  Turkey currently doesn't even have the death penalty, but that could change soon.)

I guess as a Mormon I probably count as "other Christian", and I oppose the death penalty.

Well, I don't think I'd be opposing Nuremberg executions if I were alive back there. Hopefully, we'll never have to deal with such extreme cases again.

I am a Protestant, and yes, I support it. It is sanctioned by the Bible.

I'm an agnostic atheist, and I am against the death penalty in nearly all cases.

Why should a rapist deserve to live? More so a child rapist? They should all be executed. Think about it, the effects of their crimes carry on much longer. If someone is murdered, there's no more pain for them. If someone's raped, they carry the physical and emotional trauma from that until they die. So tell me again why a rapist, specifically a child rapist has any right to live

I am a Protestant and I generally oppose the death penalty.  And I can say my faith plays a big part in my reasons for opposing it.  While it's true that it was sanctioned in the Old Testament, Christians are not under the Old Covenant.  Jesus taught us not to repay evil with more evil, but to forgive and show mercy to others.  Worse yet, we are essentially playing the role of God by deciding who is too wicked to be forgiven.  But according to the Bible, nobody is beyond redemption for God, even the worst criminals.  By killing them, we are cutting short their time to repent and be saved.  The death penalty goes completely against Christ's teachings of mercy and forgiveness.  When Jesus was on the cross, He didn't call on the Father to punish the men who had Him executed, but simply said, "Father, forgive them."

That said, there are exceptions where I would support the death penalty, or at least accept it.  I don't think the federal government should intervene either way in existing state practice (either for or against the death penalty), and I strongly support the federal death penalty for terrorism, since most terrorists are unlikely to ever repent of their crimes.

Catholic: No

Although the 'No' side in the Catholic intellectual sphere has been very irritating lately. Pretending a prudential opposition is defined doctrine, especially by people who should know better, is dishonest.

Squabbles aside, I think they're still right about the policy.
