In 1988, longtime Kentucky Senator Wendell Ford runs for the Democratic nomination and wins. He was a moderate Senator (he opposed busing, for example), and reaching out to the liberals in the party, picks Mario Cuomo as his running mate. The Republican nomination goes the same as OTL, and Bush still picks Dan Qualye. Who wins? Discuss with maps.

I say it goes like this:

Sen. Wendell Ford (D-KY) / Gov. Mario Cuomo (D-NY) - 303 EV, 51.7% PV

Vice Pres. George Bush (R-TX) / Sen. Dan Quayle (R-IN) - 235 EV, 47.4% PV

^^

I'd actually tend to agree with that map give or take South Dakota, Connecticut, and maybe California if Bush is able to get enough of the Reagan Coalition there to win the state. In conclusion 1988 was a winnable year for democrats and they could off won with a lot of people not named Mike Dukakis
