Julian would be the better bet. Unlike his brother, he's not doing anything of tremendous importance just now.

He ever did something of tremendous importance?

Lean R. It'd be a tough slog against Abbott, who is popular, but Trump isn't as popular in Texas, so it's doable. But it's much closer to likely R than Tossup.

Why isn't Julian thinking about it? Joaquin could be a future Speaker

This would be one of the worst career decisions in modern political history.

I'd prefer Julian, as I see Joaquin as a future Speaker or Senator.

After Harvey no way Abbott is being defeated, need to win Harris Co. by a good amount to even have a remote shot of winning statewide.

It's certainly possible Beto O'Rourke wins, given how unpopular Cruz has been with everyone in the Senate. He won't get help from National Republicans.

Joaquin Castro is making a bad move even considering the race, but I don't think he's actually going to run.

By that argument, Rick Scott is a lock to beat Bill Nelson in Florida.

Re-election =/ running against an incumbent. And Irma has made Scott a more formidable candidate as is the same for Abbott even though he was already a favorite.

Imagine if he actually wins if he runs. He would be hailed as a political genius.

True, but I don't see Abbott anywhere near defeat. He'll win reelection easily. So, bad move by Castro if he throws his hat into the ring.

A democrat has to win Harris county and the suburbs massively to win Texas. Abott will win big there and everywhere else because he's incredibly popular and his response to Harvey was excellent

Giving up a safe House seat for this is career suicide.

EDIT: Cruz's Senate seat is Likely R, but Abbott is 100% Safe R no matter who is running against him.

I don't think that Joaquin will ultimately run, but I agree that Julian should run instead just for the sake of helping to rebuild the Democratic Party at the state level in TX even though he would lose to Abbott.
