Wasn't there a hospital across the way?

The company of which he was the Chief Executive was found guilty of fourteen felony fraud charges pertaining to its business and Medicare billing practices (although he was not found personally guilty). That didn't prevent him from winning the GOP Primaries and the Gubernatorial election twice. I doubt this will hurt him much among Florida Republican voters.

I smell BS. Why would they call the governor instead of the police?

Someone fined over $1 billion for Medicare fraud doesn't care about seniors? Who would have thought?

I smell BS. Why would they call the governor instead of the police?

A few days before the hurricane he did a big conference call with all the hospital executives in the state. During the conversation he gave out that number, which he said was his personal cell number, and ASKED them to call him if they had problems; he said he'd do his best to get the state on their problems. The police have to field calls from everyone; why WOULDN'T you turn to the higher authority who promised specifically to help you?

This is awful.  A 2006 bill to require nursing homes to have backup generators was killed by the Florida Senate after industry lobbying:

Yes, but that doesn't absolve Scott of any blame if he TOLD them to call him on that number and there was no action taken.
Do you idiots know how many ing calls he got that day? Scott handled the storm flawlessly. Let the actual storm survivors judge his handling of it.

Then don't give your personal phone number and say you'll personally ensure all calls will be addressed lol

Here's the full story for everyone:

https://www.google.com/amp/miami.cbslocal.com/2017/09/15/rick-scott-others-refute-rehab-center-claims-irma-deaths/amp/

While Scott himself did not return the call, other officials did.

The request was for the need for the re-establishment of power in a certain part of the building (as it says in the article, some areas did have power). In addition, the hospital across the way was fully functional. Other important points to note are that Scott says that the center did not say that the patients were in danger. Also, the FPL says that, working with Broward officials, they identified priority power restoring areas. The center was listed as one, but hospitals and other such more crucial places were given priority.

Those are the key points. I would recommend reading the article.

Just imagine these ads next year:

As Trump was urging Scott to run for Senate in the middle of a storm, Scott was ignoring calls for help from a nursing home that he personally gave his number and told to call for help. 8 people died from Scott playing politics"

Yeah, but it's a Medicare facility, so their lives aren't worth more than anything but campaign smears and temporary moral outrage. Millions of elderly living in similar conditions will continue to be neglected throughout Florida and our country; wealth determines a person's worth. Had this been a facility for upper-class residents you can bet the response would've been considerably more prompt and facility more prepared.

Republicans are "business party," so that they would craft laws to insulate FPL and others from citizens being self-sustaining energy-wise is totally understandable and even should be expected. This is what happens when a party whose agenda is nearly indistinguishable from corrupt interests of big business holds all the power. They work to prevent society from moving in a direction it should be moving in, all to keep people reliant on an unstable service in the name of profits.

If they were truly an honest party of facilitating a free market, they wouldn't craft/enable rules to keep solar usage down, which hurts the solar industry. That they would do this even knowing hurricanes regularly cause long power outages is a testament to how little they care about the market, and how much they care about campaign contributions and cronyism.

I'm glad the doctors didn't handle your brother's overdose so flawlessly.

They didn't. He refused help from the EMTs who showed up.

I haven't talked to a single person - even the most ferocious Scott critics, of whom I know plenty, that haven't at least begrudgingly praised his handling of the storm.

This is politics....the truth doesn't matter. They're just going to run with Rick Scott is a killer

It's true. Unfortunate, but true.

Scott is still not going to win, but this tragedy is not going to be an issue. You'll hear more about Fangate than this next year for God's sake.

I'll at least concede that, aside from this nursing home situation (Scott's role in this awful situation is questionable, although the fact that there is widespread disregard for the conditions of Medicare facilities by government at all levels, which certainly led to these deaths, is not questionable), he has handled the Hurricane Irma crisis quite well.

Usually they go after my autistic brother, which is even more vile.
