?

I don't have a problem listening to music - in fact, sometimes that helps, but I'm not really parsing words while I listen to music and work at the same time. It's more like background noise. However, trying to digest podcasts while also banging out code or grading papers just doesn't seem to mix well with me.

I know at least one person who can do it, although I'm not sure how efficient they are at it.

I may have a podcast on at work, but if I'm particularly focused on a case, I may rewind what sound like crucial bits of the podcast since my mind's not there. If I'm doing homework, I will not have a podcast on, as I might be required to actually think and I don't want to process two semi-related data streams at once. Speaking of homework...

depends on what "work" you're talking about.  Mindless labor like dish washing or mall security, sure, easy enough.  But yeah, "wordy" stuff would be hard.  You'd either take for ever to do the work or you wouldn't be paying proper attention to the podcast...seems to me at least.

I suppose it might depend on the podcast too.

Definitely work that requires thinking and problem solving. Bland, monotonous work I have no problem listening to just about anything with. I was just curious if anyone could do work that requires ample use of their brain while also listening to casual discussions that may or may not involve intellectual topics.

overstimulation, no, well i can, just much more slowly, and more distracted, so quality of work tanks for me too.

Sure, better it than background music even.

With music, I often find myself going back to listen to certain beats or measures I like, which takes away from actual work.

Words just blend after awhile.

Transcribing audio files while listening to another conversation would be rather hard.

Only if I don't have to read/hold a conversation, yeah.

Yes. Radio is permanently turned on when I work at the office (or write in the forum, LOL).

monotonous, physical work, yes.  Work that requires significant mental concentration?  Not unless it's just background noise or intermittent.

I can listen to music just fine but omg the only think I can also do while listening to a podcast is driving. Any sort of multitasking and I can't focus on the podcast at all

I don't listen to any Podcasts but I often listen to Howard Stern when I'm working.
