Senator Kamala Harris of California was elected President of the United States last night, defeating Republican Former Governor Chris Sununu of New Hampshire and "Independent Conservative" Senator Tom Cotton of Arkansas.  Harris and her running mate, Former Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer, stood next to President Elizabeth Warren and vowed to "unify the country for all Americans from coast to coast."

Sununu hoped for the "success of our next President" and asked for the Republican Party to come together so as to "keep on fighting."  Cotton attacked the president-elect, saying that "she will only continue the failed policies of the current President."  He also attacked Sununu and the Republican Party for having "abandoned the values the hold our nation together."  The senator promised to be "the true voice of resistance in Washington" and said that he "will not stand for the regressive policies that will once again dominate the White House."  Tom Cotton ran as an independent with the nomination of Chris Sununu, who the senator claimed was "not conservative enough to represent the party."

What Does the Future Hold for the Republican Party?

After a brutal election cycle in which the Republican Party was split two different ways, party leaders are trying to figure out how to go forward.  The party split along moderate and conservative lines, with Former Governor Chris Sununu leading the moderates and Senator Tom Cotton leading the conservatives.  Many are blaming the split for Senator Kamala Harris claiming victory this past Tuesday.  "Well, it's a shame that this had to happen," said Senator Marco Rubio, who, while claiming that he would vote for Sununu, remained relatively quiet about his support for the nominee.  "It most likely did cause the Democrats to win for the third time in a row.  We need to mend the party as soon as we can if we are to keep pushing forward."  Others, such as Mississippi Senator Chris McDaniel, are less willing to agree with Rubio.  "What's most important are conservative principles remaining at the forefront of the party," said McDaniel.  "Is unification good in reality?  Of course, but with current leadership, that would most likely lead to the loss of our values."

However, Republican National Committee Chair Anthony Scaramucci is promising to push forward with a unification of the party.  "I am certain that we will find areas of compromise and will heal the party.  The Republican Party has gone through tough times before, and we will get through them now."  Asked about stepping down in light of Harris's landslide victory and the party split, Scaramucci refused to answer one way or another.  "Right now, my goal is to re-unify the party, and I will do what I need to in order to accomplish that goal."

Sources have revealed that there is the possibility of a large-scale party convention, which would be held some time before the midterm elections of 2030.

Cotton, Congressional Conservatives Create New Caucus

This afternoon, Senator Tom Cotton of Arkansas announced the creation of the bicameral Conservative Caucus.  Cotton, who ran as a third-party candidate in last November's presidential election, cited the Republican Party's "failure to uphold conservative ideals."  He said that he will not cede his Republican membership but will continue to fight the party's "less conservative" actions.  

Senate Minority Leader Joni Ernst refused to comment on the specifics of today's event, only saying to reporters, "After last year's divisive election, we need unity throughout the party."  RNC Chairman Anthony Scaramucci has not commented publicly, but sources close to him claim that he was outraged by the Arkansas senator's actions.
