Natural disasters won't ever go away--it's an fact of life on this planet. While we're here, we should do what we can to prepare and to care for those affected. This bill would set up a specific fund so that the government has the necessary resources for relief efforts in the near future. As a Missouri native, I know tornadoes all too well, and many of my constituents are in danger of hurricanes coming their way every year. It's only proper that we take action since natural disasters hurt the core of our infrastructure, not to mention the people.

I'm in total support of this bill.

Assuming that this is more of a future thing and not an emergency measure that needs a vote right away, I wonder if we might debate some things though? Like it's great that we're providing funds for hurricane and tornado relief, but what about other natural disasters? Earthquakes, floods, volcanic eruptions, tidal waves, wildfires, and blizzards can all be devastating too (maybe there's more things I can't think of?) It feels a little weird to set up a fund for only specific kinds of disasters but not others. Maybe we can either make this a more general fund or include allocations for other kinds of disasters too.

That is a very legitimate criticism. I actually realized the same thing shortly after sponsoring it. What I feel would be the most appropriate action is to reform the bill into a general fund for all those natural disasters. The only thing I'm wondering is whether we should increase the spending for the fund or simply reallocate the numbers we already have in there. I'd love to hear from the rest of the Senate.

I echo the sentiments of the previous two Senators and would like to add droughts as another natural disaster that should be included.

Would you like to propose an amendment to this effect?

Here's my attempt at an amendment. I increased the allocation by 10 billion to account for the additional disasters and added a provision for disasters that aren't listed.

Just as I supported the Storm Surge, Coastal Flooding, and Tsunami Prevention Act of 2017, I intend to support this bill as well due to the severe, devastating, and long-lasting impacts of natural disasters.
