Al Gore wins the 2000 Presidential election over George Bush. However, criticism over his handling of the response to 9/11 causes him to decline to run for re-election with Vice President Joe Lieberman, more favoured by national security-focused democrats wins the nomination.

New York Governor George Pataki wins his party nomination over Senator John McCain.

You pick the VPs.

Gov. George Pataki/Sen. John McCain: 379 Electoral Votes: 50.1%
Sen. Joe Lieberman/Sen. Barbara Boxer: 128 Electoral Votes: 36.7%
Rep. Dennis Kucinich/Fmr. Sen. Carol Moseley Braun: 33 Electoral Votes, 12.9%

President Gore had become very unpopular due to "Republican Obstructionism", the same treatment his predecessor had been given in the nineties, but worse. A report emerged that a file on Gore's desk titled "Bon Laden determined to strike U.S with Airplanes" was never read, and the Republicans went to town. Former Speaker Gingrich even went so far to run for Senate just to obstruct Gore more. President Gore was mostly known for his environmental policies and his invasion of Afghanistan. He became increasingly unpopular, and Vice President Lieberman was much more pro-war than President Gore. In early 2003, Gore declined to seek re-election, and Lieberman announced his candidacy. He was opposed by several Democrats. Senator John Kerry and Representative Dennis Kucinich made respectable showings in the Primaries, with Kucinich coming in Second, yet he decided to run on an independent ticket with Former Democratic contender Carol Moseley Braun. The Republican Primary was centered on Governor Pataki and Senator McCain, McCain led at first but health concerns and 9/11 sympathy led to Pataki making a respectable and great showing. Governor Huckabee won states too, but McCain soon dropped out. George Pataki chose his closest rival as his running mate, while Lieberman chose someone who would just accept the title due to his sinking poll numbers. The base hated Lieberman, Pataki was seen as a "new Reagan", and Kucinich even polled at 20% at one point, even being invited to the debates, but Pataki won over many voters. On Election Night, the race wasn't even close.

Love your take on it. Does Gingrich run in '96 when Nunn retires or against or in 2002 against an incumbent Max Cleland ?

Also wondering what you consider the closest state results to be.

Given your map, I'd probably guess Delaware would be mighty close.

This minus New York, Connecticut, New Jersey, Delaware, Minnesota, and Maine At Large. I do think Pennsylvania, Oregon, and Wisconsin could go either way.

The anti war vote refuses to vote for Lieberman, and Pataki easily wins.
