What is the current state of ISIS, and why doesn't Trump mention ISIS anymore? He talks about North Korea the most, bombed Assad then forgot about him, threatens Venezuela and Iran, brings back Cuban restrictions, gives address on Afghanistan strategy, etc. But doesn't talk about ISIS, when during the campaign I think he even talked about nuking them to give a message or something. Why the blackout on ISIS news?

ISIL is in a definitive and seemingly irreversible retreat right now, at least as far as their home base in Syria and Iraq goes. Part of Trump's hesitance to bring this up though I think stems from him not trying to put his face too much on what is happening in Syria more broadly, and he wants Americans to look away from the situation as soon as our "side" in the conflict is less clear than "not ISIL."

Take, for example, his negotiations with Putin. IIRC, the agreement stipulated that Syrian Kurdish forces backed by the US would be responsible for liberating areas north and east of the Euphrates, while Assad's army backed by Russia would be in charge of liberating areas south and west of the Euphrates. Both armies are supposed to stop advancing once they reach the river. However, just this week Assad's army crossed the Euphrates and captured some oil fields that ostensibly were not theirs to capture, and in so doing, may set up further SAA-Kurdish conflict in the future (not to mention Putin-Trump proxy conflict).

To be honest, I doubt Trump follows the conflict in Syria super closely, so it might also just be him trying to avoid having a "durr what's an Aleppo" moment as well.

He destroyed them within the first 30 days because he called them radical Islamic terrorists.  It was like magic.  He said the words, and they all disappeared and all of his followers forgot they even existed in the first place.  That’s what strong leadership is: magical prowess over space and time.  All Obama had to do was utter three words (“radical Islamic terrorism”) and they would’ve gone away just as easily, but he refused. Thanks Obama.

They are to all intents and purposes destroyed, but there will be a new incarnation eventually if the Sunni Arabs aren't reconciled to their respective governments (in Syria and Iraq) to their satisfaction.

ISIS itself is down to a few thousand desperate armed nutjobs in the desert, with no good options. They people who have shed the overwhelming majority of the blood (both the killing and the dying) are people Trump doesn't like - Syrian Army, Kurdish Socialists, Hezbollah milita, Iranians, etc. I suppose the Russians are technically an exception, but it's not like Trump's babysitters ares going to let him go around saying he thinks the Russians are great.

Along similar lines, there's really no political gain for the Trump administration in pointing out that ISIS is almost finished. It'll just raise questions that the Trump admin is better off leaving quiet. And that's assuming President Mush-for-Brains even remembers what Syria is, or that he ever said anything about it.

If I remember correctly, the last bit of news we heard was that Trump ceded practically all day on the matter to the generals. Nothing has been said since then.

Russia claims US fighting along side ISIS, evacuating ISIS leaders. ('Russia says' plus Zero Hedge, so take with a lot of salt.)

I'd love to see Democrats run an attack ad based on this. Not that I think it'd work necessarily, but I'd love to see the reaction.

Too many tricky choices. Like one get's the impression that Trump viewed Assad as a lesser evil to ISIS, but the cogs have finally turned in his thick head that Assad is on the same side as Hezbollah (bad!) and Iran (very bad!) Of course, Bannon had told them Arabs also were to blame, but the helpful Saudis informed him that all the terrorism was actually funded by Qatar before letting him play with the shiny orb.

Likewise, he sees SDF on the TV with their qt YPJ brigades and thinks they look very sexy, but then his good friend Erdogan calls him up and says they are actually terrorists! It's all too much work for Trump, so he has focused on a much easier solution: North Korea! No goddamn acronyms there, just a hilarious crazy fat kid.
