The controversy about not kneeling during anthem is something, as French, I don't understand.

No one would give a s*** about that in France

I think this is the best compromise

If you don't want to stand for the national anthem ,that's ok but you have to stay in the locker room during the anthem .

MODERATE COMPROMISE!!

"By all means you should feel free to protest, but make sure you are hidden away so no one can see you..."

That's the whole point , as the on field protest  is causing major problems for the NFL and they need to move on from this issue asap .

Outside of angry internet commenters, not really.

Not really? Have you not seen their ratings?

#BankruptTheNFL If the owners were smart, they would blacklist Josh Rosen ahead of time before he actually does a number on the league in a way Kap could only dream up. Banning him would instill enough faith in me to watch a few games a year again

The NFL is going to die.  Too bad.  Shouldn't have disrespected our country.

What a bunch of snowflakes to get offended by this.  And the "man" in the White House is the biggest snowflake of them all.

Athletics' Bruce Maxwell first MLB player to kneel during national anthem

This makes me so happy.

Hopefully he'll never set foot on the field again.  This isn't the NFL.  Baseball won't put up with that.

I don't think the anthem kneel is the cause of low ratings the NFL is tied in with other television channels that have took a hit by declining cable subscriptions.

Do you intentionally try to be wrong? The A's already expressed their support for him.

The NFL will still be popular long after Trump is out of office.

Excuse me, but... LOL LOL LOL LOL.

I'm not going to copy and paste the rest of the article, because that's against forum rules, but go give it a read, especially Maxwell's eloquent and respectful description of his actions.

Baseball has, in my opinion, always been the most respectable professional sport, and this makes me actually want to support them, despite not being a real sports fan.

Why even have the anthem at a game in the first place? We don't in the UK.

I'd be quite happy with no anthem at sporting events, and no Pledge of Allegiance in schools either.  Mass displays of patriotism are the hallmark of an authoritarian country, not a free one.  Loyalty and patriotism can't be imposed from outside (and social/peer pressure is a form of imposition).  They have to be earned by the state, and come from a person's convictions.

I think it's kind of a nice reflection on the freedoms we enjoy here in the US, though I'd be fine without it, too. That said, most of the fans are not respectful of the anthem anyway. I hated having to sit through the anthem at high school games because I was usually one of the very few standing and facing the flag. I was shocked when I went to a professional game and found it almost as bad.

I just don't understand why someone being respectful (kneeling is respectful) but also bringing attention to some of the issues in this country is considered a big deal when there are almost always people talking and being rude through the anthem. That's significantly more "disrespectful" than someone kneeling.

No one forced Collin Caepernick to make himself toxic.

I'm still not seeing how what Kaepernick did was so toxic, but the NFL and it's fans have absolutely no problem with this:

https://www.usatoday.com/sports/nfl/arrests/

Still sounds like there are significantly more important things to be worried about when it comes to who should be allowed to keep their jobs.

Yes.  Some of the players in today's Ravens-Jaguars game knelt during it.

The response you will see today is just further evidence of the point I brought up on Saturday: had Trump never said anything, none of this would have happened, the fringe of the NFL would have done their thing, and life would have gone on. BUT because Trump is a moron, he's actually incited many of the more 'moderate' players and convinced them that the fringe was actually correct all along.

Its the same crap we pulled in the Middle East. Bin Laden and Al Qaeda rant about how the US is controlling muslim countries, overthrowing regimes, etc....no one cares, then they attack us and we play right into their hands to radicalize thousands of more fighters.

This is all in the context that Trump doesn't want to do much to improve the underlying friction causing these protests in the first place. So again, the best thing for him to do would have been ignore and dismiss and hope it goes away by itself, but that proved to be far too difficult for him.

This is actually a smart play by Trump to the largest demographic in the Republican party: Sh**ty old men who get mad at what they see on TV all day.
