Are the campaigns of intolerant prudes only self-defeating?

I read once about how when Married...With Children started out, it was only moderately succesful. But then some housewife in Michigan saw an episode and got disgusted because it contained homosexual references, a man in garters, anda topless women holding her arms in front of her breasts (yes, this was a big deal to her.) So she wrote to the advertisers demanding they pull from the show. Her campaign picked up steam and soon she was appearing on talk shows and getting mentioned in the newspaper.

Sure enough, this just resulted in people wanting to see what the show was all about. The ratings skyrocketed, it became one of the biggest hits on TV, and advertisers decided the revenue was stronger than any potential boycott and came back. So the show stayed around for a very long time, hence meaning she accomplished nothing.

It was quite similar with the video game Night Trap. That was one of those awful FMV games that existed in the 90s, for the Sega CD, a console dedicated to such awful games, hence it's flop. The game was terrible, and sold the same way. Then intolerant fake Democrat Lieberman focused on that game as part of his whining about video games despite the fact that no one was buying it anyway. Sales skyrocketed afterword.

I am also reminded of reading about a strip club owner who said he was happy a local fundamentalist church had launched a crusade against him, as it only resulted in free advertising and increased business. Furthermore all the whining about Grand Theft Auto has done nothing to hurt the games' popularity, and it's also a main source of that idiot Marilyn Manson's popularity for his worthless crap.

So should intolerant prudes just shut up, as they usually only hurt themselves?
