Hmm... Before Powell's little UN speech I would have said Powell in a complete sweep (Ok, he may not win New York and Vermont), but now Im not so sure.  I think Powell would win, but it wouldnt be a total annihilation.

Powell 454-84

This map seems reasonable.

You're crazy Nick. Clark beats Powell pretty easily. Much more charismatic and better grasp of the issues.

I never thought Id say it, but you have been hanging around at Daily Kos entirely too much.  Clark is a poor spearker, poor campaigner, he's gaffe prone, comes off like a little weasel, and has no grasp on the issues whatsoever.  He's the biggest political opportunist and monday morning quarterback in American politics.

I could see Powell easily breaking 20% in the African American community possibly even 30%.  He would also win moderates/independents by a McCain like margin.  That leaves Clark with the white liberal base.  Eh, your right, maybe I am crazy, Clark may not win a single state.

Powell would handily defeat Clark

Best case scenario for Clark and most of his electoral votes would be in close contests [i.e. pink states]

There is no way Clark can defeat Powell.  Powell would win since he can pull Democratic votes.  Clark cannot pull Republican votes.

Which is why marginal Democratic states in 2004 would go Powell's way in 2008

It would be another defensive election andit would be a poor defence at that - Powell is near certain to score some big goals like Pennsylvania and Michigan

The sad thing is, I like Clark.  I just think his political ambitions are a little too high.  He should have ran for congress or governor or something.  President of the United States, Clark will never be.

I agree with you there. I wish he had run for governor of Arkansas first, although Huckabee was an entrenched incumbent, so that would've been tough.

It's hard to go from general to president. However, I think he is much stronger than you think. He was very green when he first ran in 2003 but has improved a lot. He is extremely bright (former Rhodes Scholar) and has developed some good policy.  I think he will be one of the frontrunners for the 2008 VP nomination (hopefully for Warner or Feingold).

Powell would carry his home state of NY.  Other than that, Nick's map is reasonable.

Powell overwhelmingly beats Clark.  Even with his UN speech, I'd support Powell over Clark any day.

Powell would clip off New Hampshire from enthusiatic support from libertarian Republicans.

However most Social Conservatives and Neo-Cons would be less that happy about that nomination.  That's why I don't think Powell would be nominated in the first place.

The nation still remembers 9/11 and Clark definitly has good security creditentials.  Anyone who is associated with the Bush administration's defense and security policy isn't going to do well in 2008.

I find this as close to real as anyone can guess at this point.

I would think that Powell carries Colorado and New Mexico as well.  I don't see Clark having any significant pull in those areas which would trump Powell's reputation.

Powell and Allen would be an awesome ticket.  Allen seems like a kick-ass nominee to me currently, maybe a toss with McCain.
