Most of the political books I have read have been really boring I dreaded picking them up.  I was looking to see what you guys are reading right now and what you have read in the past that you enjoyed.

What are you reading right now?

What are some of your favorite political books?

The Future of Freedom by Fareed Zakarias is a great and interesting read.  It's not dense at all but really makes you think about our use of democracy as a fix-all in the world.

Im reading an old book that I started a while back then stopped, but I am definitley going to finish it this time.

"We're Right, They're Wrong" by James Carville.

After that I plan on reading:  "Dont think of an Elephant" by George Lakoff  or   "Whats the matter with Kansas?  How conservatives won the heart of America" by Thomas Franks

I finished His Excellency a Washington bio, just before Christmas.  I generally like the Thomas Dye Who's Running America series.  I'm interested in elite group behavior.

The Battle for God by Kathy   is fantastic, it's hard but very good, about the history behind fundamentalism in Judaism, Islam and Christianity.

A good political book is The Emerging Republican Majority, by Kevin Phillips. It's dated(of course, it was written in 1968), but it has lots of interesting election facts and analysis. Also, it predicted very accurately what happened politically after 1968.

BTW, What's the Matter with Kansas? is a great book. No matter what your political views, it's very well written, and gives an interesting take on the conservative dominance of the Great Plains.

It is a good book.

I'd recommend Butler and Kavanagh's studies of British elections, which they've been doing since 1945. Has stuff on media coverage, campaigning in constituencies and some of the contemporary political cartoons.

Alot of DEM's read it on another board I frequently go to.  They said it was a great book to read regardless of your  political affiliation.  They also said, it was extremley depressing for Democrats because it accuratley depicts how they are losing America.

Maybe if the Dems had turned into a bunch of socialists they could win more elections?

I'm reading What's The Matter With Kansas and can verify that it is an extremely well-written and interesting book.

Prior to this I read the Witcover and Gould histories of the Dems and 'Pubs, Party of the People and Grand Old Party.

When you want to bring something up that has been buried, it's called a "bump."

Does America the Book count? Smiley

If not, then the last political book that I read was Homegrown Democrat by Garrison Keillor, but I don't think that counts either Tongue

Phil: Funnily enough, I've seen Ben say 'kick' instead of 'bump' too.

I finished Misunderestimated by Bill Sammon a few weeks ago. Presently, I'm reading Hating America by John Gibson.

My favorite one is Lies and Lying Liars Who Tell Them, by Al Franken.

The Fraken book is excellent.  One thing fraken does well is use the actual quotes of those on the right against them (which you can actually look up).  Unlike some Conservative Authors (ahhem Coulter) who just makes crap up

The author is Karen Armstrong, and its an excellent choice. I read it a couple of years ago and still find myself referring to it when I hear about certain figures or groups in the news. The book spans 500 years of history tracking the strikingly parallel rise of fundementalism in the great religions descended from Abraham.

I don't have a political book that I'm reading now, though my Christmas copy of Speaker waits for me to have a few spare hours to read it.

Have you heard the Book on Tape? Andrew Barr, the kid who faked going to Bob Jones, is recorded on it, and they re-enact the whole thing.
