Yep, if he wins, and is still alive at the beginning of 2013, it'll have been 54 years. He was first elected in 1958. Right now he's just about 8 months short of Thurmond's 47 year, 5 month record (Thurmond resigned and then ran again, losing7 months). Byrd has already set the record for longest continously in the Senate.

Ted Kennedy and Daniel Inouye are 3rd and 4th places, being elected in 1962.  They will break Thurmond's record in 2010.

He's not lasting that long.

Byrd is not running for anything. He is walking.  Slowly.

You got that right, Tedrick. But he's going to keep going until the end.

Nah, Bunning's mad. Byrd is merely a bit senile. Tongue
Anyways, I wish him no success in the primary.

With reference to Senator Robert Byrd, and to once and for all clalrify his connections with the Ku Klux Klan, the following is a quote from the Wikipedia article

Notable Ku Klux Klan members in national politics

Quote

West Virginia's Democratic Senator Robert Byrd was a recruiter for the Klan while in his 20s and 30s, rising to the title of Kleagle and Exalted Cyclops of his local chapter.  After leaving the group, Byrd spoke in favor of the Klan during his early political career.  Though he claimed to have left the organization in 1943, Byrd wrote a letter in 1946 to the group's Imperial Wizard stating "The Klan is needed today as never before, and I am anxious to see its rebirth here in West Virginia."  Byrd defended the Klan in his 1958 U.S. Senate campaign when he was 41 years old.

He has since called joining the Klan his "greatest mistake," but has continued to be involved in racial controversies including a 2001 incident in which he repeatedly used the phrase "white n******" on a national television broadcast.

Unquote

This embarrassment to the United States Senate, known as Robert Byrd, should be forcefully retired by the voters of West Virginia in 2006.

Only way? Hardly. The WV GOP is still rather nonexistant at the state level.

this clown needs to go. i like many democrats so my dislike for him is not partisan. he is just a waste of space and takes up the senate's time by whining about the most trite of issues so often.

What may seem trite to the rest of the nation is important to Robert Byrd and West Virginians.  Byrd represents his state well.  He deserves one last term.

I wish the state of West Virginians would realise that Byrd's past makes him a disgrace to their state.

The important thing is that he has always been able to bring home a lot of money to a state that needs a lot of money and is unable to generate enough of it's own.

That's obviously just a pet peeve of his and not a focal point of his campaign/career.  That's lame.  Although I disagree with him on trade, he's fought for the people of WV in his numerous protectionist stances.
