Atlasian Symbols Act

1. The Senate recognizes that Atlasia is without symbols.
2. The Senate agrees to create the following symbols: National Motto, National Flower, National Bird, National Tree, National Fish and National Animal.
3. If passed each Senator shall submit themselves, or get from his constituents 10 options for each symbol to the Secretary of Forum Affairs.
4. After all options are received the Secretary of Forum Affairs shall administer a vote on each symbol, using preferential voting. Whichever symbol receives the most support shall become the national symbol for each option.

Senators and the Vice President,

I rise in opposition of this legislation, the Atlasian Symbols Bill.

There are several problems with this bill and I frankly could not support it in its current form.  First of all, the bill provides for the creation of a National Bird symbol, a National Fish symbol, and a National Animal symbol.  Is it permissable to nominate another type of fish or bird in the "National Animal" category?  Why not call it the category National Mammal instead?  I must also comment on the extreme pointlessness of having a national fish-- a national fish-- it makes about as much sense as having a national arachnid or national frog.

Beyond that, there is a serious problem with Section 3 of this bill, which states that a Senator shall submit ten options for each symbol to the Department of Forum Affairs.  Ten options times ten Senators times six new categories is six hundred options that the Department will have to administer a vote on.  Can we expect the public to put up with such a daunting task of going through one-hundred options for six separate categories?  Can we not have some sort of remorse for the Department of Forum Affairs, whose job in this would be potentially hellish if there were some sort of tie or no clear majority in a preferential voting contest where there are one-hundred options for just one category?

This bill, while simple and well-meaning at first glance, is in fact a great burden on the Department of Forum Affairs and the Atlasian public.  I urge the Senate to defeat it.

Y'all could limit it to a Motto, Natural Symbol, and Animal and have each Senator recommend a single item for vote.

Ok if Ebowed insists on being like this for another bill I'll change it for you.

Here's the amendments:

2. The Senate agrees to create the following symbols: National Motto, Mammel and Bird.
3. If passed each Senator shall submit themselves, or get from his constituents 1 option for each symbol to the Secretary of Forum Affairs.

Being like what?  I seriously don't want the Department of Forum Affairs to have to administer an election where the ballot has 600 choices on it.

Either way, I support the amendment.

Yes, with this amendment, there is just the right amount of lunacy to garner my support. Cheesy

2. The Senate agrees to create the following symbols: National Motto, Mammal and Bird.

The question is on final passage: All those in favor, say Aye; those opposed, say No.
