Having checked this... other things can be used, yes. I'll post more when I'm not tired but for one thing a sort of woven ceremic fibre is acutally better for insulating high tempreture electric conductors (which was, IIRC, one of the main uses of asbestos).

Sadly a lot of people have died due to that as well. People who do a lot of DIY being the obvious ones.
Other things can be used and the construction industry generally doesn't like to use it these days.

I think it's still being voted on. Mind you things had basically shut down in the Senate for a few days.

Done a count and we have 4 Ayes, 2 Nays and an Abstain. Seeing as the vote has been going on for a week I think it should be called to a close. If there's anyone around that can actually do that...

Well, in that case:

The amendment has passed.

I have a problem with this provision:
4. The Senate hereby bans the sale of Asbestos within Atlasia.
How is "asbestos" defined here? If it includes "products that include asbestos", it might ban the sale of buildings that have asbestos in their walls, which would clearly be totally absurd. If it only includes 100% pure asbestos, it would be easily circumvented.

Does any senator wish to suggest an amendment to remedy this problem?

It was meant to be anything made with asbestos after this bill passes. So anything that already has asbestos in it previous to this bills passage (Houses as Lewis said) would still be allowed to be sold. As for an amendment I'm not sure, what do you think Al?

We could always go with something along the lines of "...defined as any product containing asbestos, with the exception of houses" or something like that.

Or "any product containing asbestos, with the exception of any product that was made before the passage of this bill"?

I thought legislation in the Senate was supposed to be simpler.

I have a pretty fair amount of knowledge from past experience about asbestos lawsuits and the claims made within the various legal cases.

My little hint as GM to the Senate is that this legislation opens up a number of issues that might lead to some interesting consequences.

Wouldn't it be better than companies going bankrupt because of asbestos lawsuits? Smiley

This bill has languished here for far too long.  Let us put an end to its misery.

I motion for this bill to be put to a vote.

Asbestos Ban Bill

1. The Senate hereby bans the importation of Asbestos.
2. The Senate hereby bans the mining of Asbestos.
3. The Senate hereby bans the transportation of Asbestos without a permit.
4. The Senate hereby bans the sale of Asbestos within Atlasia.
5. The Senate hereby bans the use of Asbestos in the construction of products.
6. Existing Asbestos related settlements will be unaffected by this act

Assuming there are no objections to opening the vote now...

The question is on final passage. Those in favor, say Aye; those opposed, No.
