If it's a good idea to circumvent economic price-clearing on vehicles, then why not just charge a large fee on every vehicle sold to encourage fewer vehicles?

Have fun riding bicycles, Atlasia, when all your car companies go out of business.

yes, as all the japanese and european manufacturers have.

These companies can charge more for their goods.  Atlasian car companies are struggling to compete as it is.

Here's a hypothetical:
I am a house painter.  I am either forced to buy a compact car to transport my painting supplies and ladders, or I must pay thousands of extra dollars to the government in order to buy a product that suits my needs.  Is that fair?

Ah, excellent, so I can pay to have a van imported from Australia.  Sounds practical for the average Atlasian worker.

it would not encourage change to more fuel efficient vehicles form the consumer's side.

Because for everyone to drive a compact car is not practical.  People should have the right to purchase the product that works best for them without being punished by the government for it.
